1 ticket wins $70 million jackpot on day true story
Maybe New York should be called the Jackpot State.
Powerball produced a single jackpot winner Saturday night, and the lucky ticket was sold about 20 miles north of Manhattan.
Local players will have to take heart in a $225,000 Cash 5 win last week in Philadelphia. (The numbers were 4, 23, 24, 33, 34 for the Feb. 16 drawing.)
There's also a chance South Jersey might have landed one or both of the state's two second-tier prizes in Friday's drawing in the Mega Millions lottery, whose jackpot Tuesday will be worth $94 million for the annuity, $68.9 million for the cash.
Powerball has rebooted to $40 million - $25 million cash - for Wednesday's drawing.
Saturday's winning ticket matched all the numbers drawn: 6, 11, 42, 53 and 54, with a Powerball of 7. It was purchased at the Dairy Del sandwich shop on South Central Avenue in Hartsdale.
The win was New York's 15th top prize in Powerball or Mega Millions in just three years.
California, which doesn't sell Powerball, is runner-up, with a dozen Mega Millions winners.
New Jersey has had three, Pennsylvania two during the same time span.
New York on Saturday also had one of three $1 million winners, who matched the first five numbers. The others were in Georgia and Illinois.
A Florida ticket won $2 million for matching five while having the Powerplay prize-boosting option.
In Mega Millions, the latest numbers were 1, 16, 18, 25 and 27, with a Mega Ball of 3.
Again, New York got lucky, landing one of the eight second-tier prizes that go to tickets that match the first five numbers. Only New Jersey had two. With one each were Virginia, Ohio, Massachusetts, Texas and California.
The regular prize - $250,000 in most states - gets bumped to $1 million if the player also had the Megaplier multiplier option.
Mega Millions does not publicize Megaplier results, but often they become available from each state.
The locations of the New Jersey wins will be added to this article when they're available, usually by mid-afternoon.
Powerball and Mega Millions are both sold in 41 states, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
