Emmy Rossum On 'Shameless' Season 2 Pregnancy Shocker And Steve's Return on day true story

Sunday night's "Shameless" shocker -- Karen's (Laura Wiggins) pregnancy -- may have serious consequences for the Gallagher family, especially for older siblings Fiona (Emmy Rossum) and Lip (Jeremy Allen White), who will face off in an explosive argument before the season's end.

"It's incredibly frustrating for Lip because he's done so much for the family, and the first time that he asks for any help in return, the family comes up somewhat empty-handed," White told HuffPost TV in December. "I think that there's a great sense of betrayal that Lip feels halfway through the season."

Lip has to contend not just with the weight of his impending fatherhood but also with the wrath of his older sister Fiona, who is not happy about Karen's pregnancy.

"Fiona doesn't like Karen," Rossum recently told HuffPost TV. "She thinks that Karen is the town bike, which she is, and Fiona doesn't trust her. She thinks that Karen is manipulative, so Fiona doesn't have a lot of love for Karen. She supports Lip in what he wants, but she's really mad about this possibility of Karen having a baby and it maybe being Lip's."

In the wake of the unplanned news, Lip makes a few questionable decisions -- and that's where things between Fiona and Lip start to unravel.

"Fiona is sacrificing so much so that Lip can have a better life, and he doesn't want it for himself," said Rossum. "That really makes Fiona angry."

The blow-up between the two Gallagher siblings will even cause Lip to leave the house in a very Frank-like manner.

"It's a pretty big moment for the family," revealed Rossum. "Fiona and Lip are arguing about how he's living his life and how he deals with Karen's pregnancy because how he deals with that and how Fiona wants him to deal with that are very different. They don't see eye-to-eye, so they have this big fight, and Fiona basically gives him an ultimatum that causes Lip to leave."

After leaving the Gallagher house -- his undoubted safety net -- Lip, like his deadbeat alcoholic father, spends the day going from house to house, looking for a place to crash. It looks like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree in this dysfunctional family.

Amid all the drama, however, there is something to look forward to for fans of Fiona and Steve (Justin Chatwin). After Fiona's desperate phone call in Sunday night's episode, Steve's return to Chicago may come sooner than expected.

"Fiona accepts an invitation to go to a wedding with this guy she's been seeing, and after this wedding goes horribly wrong, she comes back at another low point, feeling awful," Rossum said. "And he just so happens to be standing on a street corner. She's not expecting him to come back."

But just because Steve is back in Fiona's life, don't expect them to get together ... yet.

"He reveals some things about his life that make it almost impossible for them to be together initially," explained Rossum. "We're going to see them wanting to be together, but they need to face this obstacle first."

"Shameless" airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. EST on Showtime.

Seven months out of rehab, 'humbled' Artie Lange talks Hoboken -- the parade, the cannolis, the view -- with The Jersey Journal on day true story

Artie Lange is no fan of parades.

The former Howard Stern sidekick loves Hoboken, where he's called a one-bedroom condo home for the past decade, but he sees the town's annual St. Patrick's Day march down Washington St. -- notorious for straddling the barricade between raging all-night orgy and major boon for the local economy -- as a nuisance, if not for that reason.

"I've been saying this forever. Parades are a concept people came up with before cars. Every nationality has their own parade now and you've got to realize if somebody throws out a refrigerator on 38th Street, there's traffic in Brooklyn because of it," he told The Jersey Journal.

However, he can understand some local business owners taking issue.

"The bars in Hoboken, it's still one of those towns, where the fellas still get a piece of stuff, it's all Irish-named bars owned by Italian guys," he said, half-kidding. "It's like you're in Eddie O'Reilly's and this is the owner Anthony, and therefore they still have a lot of influence -- in any city."

Lange wouldn't mind if New York City canceled its parades, too, although, for more than a decade, all his memories of the holiday have been after the crowds broke up and the punching broke out, a few blocks west of Fifth Avenue.

"From the time I was 17 to almost 28, almost every year, I was at the Blarney Stone, fighting, God knows what. I remember the Knicks played the Celtics, St Patrick's Day at the Garden, and we're at the Blarney Stone across the street after the parade. We watched the first two quarters at the bar before realizing we had tickets, we were so drunk."

Lange isn't drunk anymore. He's been off booze, drugs, gambling and prostitutes since leaving rehab last June, the first time he attempted recovery for more than eight days, and says what he's now experiencing is his fifth second chance at life.

That second chance brought Lange to Atlantic City last weekend, where he joined his friends, and fellow sober comics, Jim Norton and Dave Attell, for a sold-out weekend run of their annual Anti Social Comedy Tour at the Borgata Events Center. It was Lange's first time before such a large crowd -- 6,000 fans over two nights -- in more than two and a half years, performing material he'd been honing for months, first at Manhattan's Comedy Cellar then in appearances on "The Late Show with David Letterman" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live.''

Before he could tell his first joke he'd already received a standing ovation, and once the crowd calmed he summarized his current situation.

"You guys probably know I'm not allowed to gamble, drink, do drugs or f*** whores anymore, so its great to be here at the Borgata. Tomorrow, if you want to see me, I'll be doing the only thing I'm allowed to do according to my sponsor in AA, and that's browse the gift shop for eighteen hours."

Lange's only remaining vices are smoking and food, but even those he can resist if the situation calls for it, asking us first before lighting up, and offering us the opportunity to indulge in his minibar, even take a Toblerone for the road.

Asked about his decade-old craving for the cannolis at Carlo's Bakery, home to Hoboken's next most famous resident, the Cake Boss, Lange shows even more restraint.

"I'm so jaded, I'm a Yankee fan, I hate that they're good -- 1989 they sucked, there was no traffic, you can get in and get out. Now I'm sort of bored with it. I just want to go to a game, I don't want them to be good anymore," he joked.

And on the topic of overexposed local athletes, Lange sympathizes with Hoboken's occasional star athlete, Kris Humphries, who he suggested may soon be moving just forty feet down the hall. That may not have been where Humphries imagined himself a year ago, but it isn't where Lange imagined himself either.

"When I came out of the daze coming out of rehab, everything came back much quicker than I thought, and I remember coming back to Hoboken and looking at the view and appreciating it with a clear head for the first time. I should be in a f***ing studio apartment in Newark right now trying to get ready for my job at Applebee's, instead I'm in a suite still talking to you, and I'm just f***ing lucky, man. I'm very humbled by everything."

NBA Trade Rumors: Is Philadelphia Really in the Hunt for Amar'e Stoudemire? on day true story

Rod Thorn wants to make us believe the Amar'e Stoudemire rumors came out of thin air, but everyone knows, denials of smoke don't mean there was never a fire.

It isn't as if we've never heard a rumor denied by a general manager, only to see some variance of that deal completed later. In a sense, GMs are no more than politicians—take from that analogy what you like.

Here are some things to consider in this scenario.

GMs and Owners Will Almost Always Deny Trade Rumors

In 2009, Wizards owner Ted Leonsis denied rumors that he was looking to trade then-star Gilbert Arenas to the Orlando Magic. This was before the "chi" fell off his Hibachi. At the time, one of the rumors was that Vince Carter, who played for Orlando then, would be a part of the deal.

How much stock do you put it rumor denials?

How much stock do you put it rumor denials?

  • Believe them 100 percent

  • I know its all gamesmanship

  • Don't know what to believe

As we would later see, Arenas was indeed dealt to the Magic. It was in exchange for Rashard Lewis, not Vince Carter, even though Carter was traded to Phoenix earlier in the day.

The trade didn't happen until the following year. Though the deal wasn't exactly as had been rumored, the same teams were involved, and ultimately the same marquee players moved, even with "honest" Ted saying the talk was nothing more than rumors.

Many teams' front offices and ownership feel the need to be deceiving when discussing trade talks. They prefer to avoid unnecessarily distracting or irritating players who have not been officially moved.

Take a look at the Lamar Odom fiasco. Odom went all emo on the Lakers after the first Chris Paul deal fell through that forced them to move him to Dallas.

Players can be understandably sensitive about trades, and speaking too soon about talks can create a problem, especially if the deal doesn't go through. The Odom situation was a bit unavoidable for the Lakers, but it shows what the cons can be.

In addition, general managers never like to show their hand. It can relinquish leverage for future deals with other teams.

If Thorn is outward about his desire to trade for Stoudemire, it may ignite interest from other teams, mainly their Eastern Conference rivals.

From a competition standpoint, it can be hurtful.

Adding STAT Makes Sense

The Sixers need a go-to scoring guy. The scoring-by-committee is a nice concept, but most teams that win the NBA championship have a guy.

Do you believe the 76ers need Stoudemire or someone like him to get over the hump?

Do you believe the 76ers need Stoudemire or someone like him to get over the hump?

  • Yes

  • No

The Lakers have Kobe Bryant, the Mavericks have Dirk Nowitzki—the only possible exception were the 2003-2004 Detroit Pistons. That team still had Chauncey Billups to go to for big shots.

Whom do the Sixers have? Jrue Holiday? Don't get me wrong, I love Holiday, but I don't think a 21-year-old with a career scoring average of 11.2 points per game can be called a go-to guy just yet.

Stoudemire is an unquestioned 20-point-per-game scorer. At this point, its the only element the Sixers are missing.

The team is already built on defense, and they have several players bringing that to the table. That is evidenced by their NBA-best 87.4 points allowed. Now they need a true scorer to improve their ability to get buckets in clutch situations.

The Sixers average 24 points per game in the fourth quarter, but 66 percent of those points come in transition. That will not be effective in the playoffs. Stoudemire provides the solid, half-court go-to man the Sixers need.

Whether the rumor is exactly right or accurate in principle remains to be seen, but I believe there is something to it. The Sixers are looking to win, and they know they are close. Stoudemire makes too much sense not to be considered, no matter what anyone says.

‘Love and Hip Hop’ reunion to air on VH1 as a ‘special episode’ - Boston TV on day true story

All die-hard fans of "Love and Hip Hop" are feeling a little lost today.  After loyally consuming ten season 2 episodes of the show on VH1, fans of Chrissy, Emily, Yandy, Olivia, and Somaya (okay, okay, and Mama Jones), are left with one question:

Is the "Love and Hip Hop" season 2 reunion airing tonight or what?!

Turns out, it's not.  And turns out, it's not exactly a reunion, either.  VH1 hasn't revealed all the details yet, so let's try to read between the lines.

On VH1's website, a "special episode" of "Love and Hip Hop" will air on February 6th at 8pm.  Emily Bustamante is arguably the most active on Twitter of all the "Love and Hip Hop" women, and even she seems sort of tight-lipped.

Emily revealed that she wore a red dress to the "special episode," but when asked by a fan if the "special episode" is indeed a reunion, Emily plays the role of a politician better than the ones working in Washington.

"Umm kind of ;) U gotta watch," tweets Emily.

It's possible the "Love and Hip Hop" reunion isn't being labeled a "reunion" because not all of the women were willing to be on stage with one another (Kimbella and Erica come to mind, along with maybe even Chrissy and Yandy).

We'll see what happens.  Hopefully the "special episode" is up to the usual standards of "reunion episodes."

I mean, seriously, who can forget Somaya Reece calling Olivia's manager Rich a "vagina" last year?

Do you qualify for thousands from Earned Income Tax Credit? - Wire on day true story

Uncle Sam is worried that some people aren't getting their Earned Income Tax Credit, worth up to $5,751 for the 2011 tax season.

The tax credit is to help low- or moderate-income workers with those having children getting more of a credit. Those eligible for the credit can get a refund even if they owe no tax.

But the IRS estimates that one out of five eligible tax filers fail to claim it. People may not be aware of it since they have not previously been able to qualify for it, according to the Internal Revenue Service..

"Many people who have experienced changes like going from full-time to part-time work, had their salary reduced or had a baby may not know that they qualify for the credit for the first time," the IRS said.

Most low to moderate-income parents are savvy about the tax credit that, in most cases, puts thousands of dollars in their pocket each year, said Mark Daily, owner of seven Jackson Hewitt franchises in South Florida.

They tend to file early because they need the refund. "They use it to get a new apartment or buy a used car," he said. "It's a boost to the economy."

The people who may not know they qualify are the single filers, Daily said. But the credit for singles is only a fraction of what parents get.

For the 2011 tax year, Jackson Hewitt says the maximum credit is:

$5,751 for three or more qualifying children

$5,112 for two qualifying children

$3,094 with one qualifying child

$ 464 with no qualifying children.

To qualify for the tax credit, workers must have total earned income and adjusted gross income less than:

$43,998 (or $49,078 for married filing jointly) with three or more qualifying children.

$40,964 (or $46,044 for married filing jointly) with two qualifying children.

$36,052 (or $41,132 for married filing jointly) with one qualifying child.

$13,660 (or $18,740 married filing jointly) with no qualifying children.

The Cain file . . .

Zzzzzzzzzzz: As the nation awaits former GOP presidential hopeful Herman "I wanna be a member of the White House Cabinet" Cain's announcement (yawn) Thursday before the South Carolina primary, the Chicago woman he allegedly wronged continues to have a string of bad luck.

◆ To wit: Sneed is told Sharon Bialek, the bodacious blond who bopped Cain by accusing him of being sexually aggressive to her while she was in pursuit of a job when he was head of the National Restaurant Association, recently lost out on her bid to become an ad saleswoman at WIND-radio.

◆ Translation: "She showed up three hours late for an interview, [a delay] she claimed was caused by bad weather," said a source.

Poison Penn . . .

The state of the Penn man's ship: Actor Sean Penn, who is now an official "ambassador-at-large" for Haiti due to his relief work for the earthquake-devastated country — felt his new title of "Mr. Ambassador" would be more helpful than "being called hey you (bleep.)" Ah, class.

The Weekend pickup . . .

◆ Hoop scoop: Mayor Rahm Emanuel and President Barack Obama's best friend/basketball buddy Eric Whitaker attended the Morgan Park vs. Simeon boys basketball game Friday night. (Simeon, which stars USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year, Jabari Parker, won.)

◆ Droop loop: Whatever happened to the separation of church and state? Obama best buddy, senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, who no longer holds much sway over the rest of the president's advisers, spent Sunday speaking from Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s pulpit in Atlanta, blasting . . . Republicans!

◆ Power loop: In case you weren't focusing, that was Mayor Emanuel's mega-agent brother, Ari Emanuel, being thanked by Golden Globes winner Martin Scorsese.

Scoopsville . . .

Vote 'em: Watch for the Chicago Board of Elections to announce a $377,000 Pentagon grant to automate the dispatch and ballot marking system for troops and civilians overseas.

◆ The upshot: The program and equipment will be in place for the March 2012 primary. Natch.

Downton data . . .

Baron Julian Fellowes, the creator of the hit PBS TV series "Downton Abbey," claims Highclere House — where the series is filmed in Hampshire, England — was also converted into a hospital during World War I — just like it is in the fictional show.

◆ The difference: The family who owned the house moved out during that time — contrary to the Downton script.

The Romney report . . .

Sneed hears top GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney has an ever-enlarging bulbous eye on South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who is of Indian descent, as his running mate.

Romney Report II . . .

Luck pluck: State Treasurer Dan Rutherford, who is Romney's Illinois campaign chairman, tells Sneed he's wrapped up
Romney's election petitions in a good
luck charm. "I bound them in the
leather laces of my old work boots," said Rutherford.

◆ Backshot: "I did the same to bind my election petitions when I ran for state treasurer, and I won. So I thought I'd do it again. I did it to represent the hard-working men and women of Illinois."?

Sneedlings . . .

Today's birthdays: Michelle Obama, 48; James Earl Jones, 81; Muhammad Ali, 70; Betty White, 90; Chuck Goudie, ageless; and belated wishes to Anita Alvarez.

SpongeBob SquarePants' Pineapple House Is Mathematically Impossible | NewsFeed on day true story

If you weren't already convinced by the fact that a show about a pants-wearing sponge living under the sea takes more than a few artistic liberties when it come to depicting reality, here's another: YouTube personality and self-proclaimed "mathemusician" Vi Hart is arguing that Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants does not live in an actual pineapple—and she's made a video to prove it.

"Dear Nickelodeon," she starts. "I've gotten over how SpongeBob's pants are not actually square. I can ignore most of the time that Gary's shell is not a logarithmic spiral. But what I cannot forgive is that SpongeBob's pineapple house is a mathematical impossibility."

Using the Fibonacci sequence in mathematics, she draws (rather impressive) diagrams while explaining the mathematics behind spirals and how real pineapples follow the principle, while Nickelodeon's animated depiction does not.

As long as she's discussing impossibilities, should we bring up the fact that SpongeBob's pet snail meows like a cat?

Grace Reorganization Plan Affirmed by U.S. District Court on day true story

January 31, 2012 9:58 AM EST

COLUMBIA, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- W. R. Grace & Co. (NYSE: GRA) today announced that the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware has denied all objections and confirmed Grace's Plan of Reorganization in its entirety. The Bankruptcy Court decision approving the Joint Plan was issued on January 31, 2011. Grace filed for Chapter 11 protection on April 2, 2001.

"This is another necessary step in emerging from Chapter 11," said Fred Festa, Chairman and CEO. "Two Federal courts have now ruled that our Joint Plan is fair to all parties."

The Joint Plan establishes two asbestos trusts to compensate personal injury claimants and property owners. Funds for the trusts will come from a variety of sources including cash, warrants to purchase Grace common stock, deferred payment obligations, insurance proceeds and payments from certain third parties. The trusts' assets and operations are designed to cover all current and future asbestos claims.

"I am optimistic that the legal process related to our Joint Plan is coming to an end and we can emerge in the near future," said Festa. "It is time to put the Joint Plan into effect so that money can begin to flow to claimants who have been waiting for more than a decade to be compensated, and Grace can move forward as well. I look forward to Grace emerging from Chapter 11 as a vibrant, growing company with a great future."

The timing of Grace's emergence from bankruptcy depends on a number of factors, including whether there are further appeals to the Joint Plan, whether Grace may emerge with those appeals outstanding, and whether conditions to payments from third parties can be satisfied or waived.

The company will address the District Court's ruling in prepared remarks at the introduction of the company's fourth quarter 2011 earnings teleconference, which will be web cast on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. ET. University of Memphis, Vanderbilt discussing possible football series » The Commercial Appeal on day true story

University of Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson said the football program's lack of Southeastern Conference teams on future schedules could change soon.

Johnson, who retires in June, has entered into discussions with Vanderbilt about possibly playing the Commodores as early as 2013. No SEC teams are on the U of M schedule this fall for the first time since 1948. SEC teams also are absent from the 2013 and 2014 schedules.

While the U of M's non-conference schedule is full for 2013 with games against Duke, Middle Tennessee, Louisville and Arkansas State, Johnson said there is the possibility one of those teams might opt out, creating an opening for Vanderbilt.

``We are still trying to shuffle things,'' Johnson said. ``We always try to accommodate but moving people (off the schedule or placing them on a future schedule), that's hard to do.''

Johnson said he spoke with Vanderbilt's vice chancellor for university affairs and athletics David Williams ``around Christmas.''

``We had a nice visit,'' Johnson said. ``We talked about how we both wanted to play. We'll continue to have those conversations.''

The U of M's future schedules are tentatively set through 2016 with no SEC opponents appearing until 2015 when league newcomer Missouri plays Memphis at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Memphis returns the game in 2016.

Johnson said Ole Miss could return to the U of M schedule in 2016 and 2017, joining another SEC program -- Tennessee -- in 2017. The U of M's most attractive non-conference schedules in years are set for 2015 (Miami, Louisville, Missouri, Kansas) and 2016 (Louisville, Missouri, Ole Miss, Kansas).

``Kansas and Ole Miss are verbal (agreements),'' Johnson said.

Ole Miss and Memphis discontinued their series after the 2009 game

He added his philosophy on non-conference scheduling remains the same, a mix of ``two significant name teams and two regional name teams.''

Former Waterloo Black Hawk gets new ride in Nationwide series - KWWL.com on day true story

CONCORD, N.C. (KWWL) -&

Former Waterloo Black Hawk and Des Moines native, Michael Annett, has a new ride in the Nationwide series thanks to Richard Petty Motorsports.

Annett was released from Rusty Wallace Incorporated earlier this month when they decided to not field any cars for the 2012 season.

Richard Petty Motorsports announced on Thursday that they will form a new Nationwide series team for 2012 with Annett driving the 43 Ford sponsored by his longtime partner, Pilot Flying J.  The team will be based out of RPM's Concord, North Carolina shop.

Annett has posted 13 top-10 finishes in 105 Nationwide Series starts and finished ninth in the Nationwide series points standings last season.

"They say that when one door closes, another door opens, and that is most definitely true," Annett said in a written statement. "We were left scrambling a bit because of the situation with RWI and were unsure what the future held, but I couldn't be happier with the way things have turned out. To have the chance to race for Richard Petty and to be under the RPM umbrella is amazing. It has all come together really quickly, but together with Pilot Flying J and Ford, this is the best opportunity I have ever had to race a Nationwide Series car. There's a lot to be done before we get to Daytona in a few weeks and I can't wait to dive in and get started."

"This has been an exciting couple of months for Richard Petty Motorsports," Richard Petty said in a written statement. "We are looking forward to getting back into the Nationwide Series full time and seeing what Michael Annett can do in an RPM Ford Mustang. Michael has improved every season he has raced in the Nationwide Series and has the dedication and drive to be a success."

Annett was a part of the Waterloo Black Hawks Clark Cup championship team in 2004. He also played 59 regular season games in 2004-2005. In all, Annett played in 100 regular season games during his USHL career, racking up eight career assists and 89 penalty minutes.

He began his racing career in 2007 competing in the ARCA Series. In his fourth start, Annett drove to victory lane at Talladega Superspeedway.  In the next season, at Daytona International Speedway, Annett drove to victory lane for a second time.  He also drove in eight events in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series that season.

In 2009, Annett moved to the Nationwide Series driving for Germain Racing.  He had four top-10 finishes and finished in 10th-place in the point standings. He stayed with Germain through the 2010 season before moving to RWI in 2011.

Kinder Morgan and Arch Coal Sign Throughput Agreement to Further Expand Coal Terminal Network on day true story

HOUSTON & ST. LOUIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, L.P. (NYSE: KMP - News) today announced plans to invest approximately $140 million to further expand its coal handling facilities along the Gulf Coast. Concurrently, Arch Coal (NYSE: ACI - News) has signed a long-term throughput agreement with KMP that will help support the expansion of these export facilities. Also, Arch and KMP are in final discussions to include, in the throughput agreement, port space for coal shipments at KMP-owned facilities on the East Coast.

Upon completion of the proposed terminal upgrades and subject to certain rail service agreements, Arch will ship coal at guaranteed minimum volume levels through KMP-owned terminals. The expansion of KMP's export facilities along the Gulf Coast and East Coast will provide incremental port capacity for Arch's growing seaborne coal volumes.

"The demand for export coal continues to grow and we are pleased to offer Arch and other customers options in various markets through our multi-location terminal network," said Jeff Armstrong, president of Kinder Morgan Terminals. "We are also extending existing long-term coal agreements with Arch at our upriver terminals (Cora, Cahokia and Kellogg) in Illinois."

"This strategic partnership with Kinder Morgan, a company with a proven track record of running successful terminal operations, will allow Arch to significantly increase our participation in the global coal market," said John W. Eaves, Arch's president and chief operating officer. "This dedicated capacity directly underpins our long-term strategy to grow Arch's coal exports by fourfold in the next decade, and is consistent with our view that a global coal supply shortfall will persist over that time frame."

Specific to the expansions on the Gulf Coast, KMP will install a new shiploader and a railcar loop track to handle three 135-car unit trains at its Deepwater terminal in Houston. Following completion of the project, the Deepwater terminal will have throughput capacity of 10 million tons of coal per year. The projects are expected to be immediately accretive to cash available to KMP unitholders upon completion, which is anticipated in the second quarter of 2014.

KMP's Deepwater and East Coast facilities offer dual rail access from Class 1 railroads, while International Marine Terminal (IMT) provides barge access to the inland waterway system. The Deepwater terminal will be capable of handling panamax- and post panamax-size vessels, while one East Coast terminal and IMT will be capable of handling cape-size vessels. These multiple transportation options will allow Arch to unlock incremental value for its domestic coal production and coal reserves over the next 10 years. Anticipated throughput volumes will consist of metallurgical and thermal coal from Arch's major coal producing regions, including Appalachia, the Powder River Basin, the Western Bituminous Region and eventually the Illinois Basin.

"Securing additional port capacity further supports the expansion of Arch's international coal platform," said Eaves. Will The Stock Market Love Obama Today? Stocks Fall After President Obama's State Of The Union Address - MarketBeat on day true story

The stock market's steep gains under Obama's three years as president have generated a great deal of discussion. From the early look of things, Obama's populist pitch in last night's State of the Union address isn't getting such a warm and fuzzy reaction from stock investors.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened lower, recently falling 65 points, or 0.5%, to 12610, while the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index shed 5 points, or 0.4%, to 1310. Gongloff already detailed how the market is showing early signs of fatigue. And the situation in Europe isn't making folks feel too chipper this morning.

Those are the more likely reasons the market has opened down as opposed to Obama's speech last night. But for what it's worth, stocks have had a wide-ranging reaction on the day after previous State of the Union addresses.

The fine folks at WSJ Market Data Group compiled the Dow Jones Industrial Average's reaction following each major presidential speech dating back to JFK's State of the Union address in January 1961. (The data includes State of the Union addresses as well as speeches to joint sessions of Congress.)

The market's worst performance came on Jan. 27, 2000, which followed Bill Clinton's final State of the Union address. The Dow dropped 289 points that day. Fears that the Fed would tighten interest rates dominated the market tone back then.

The best performance, by point value, came two years later on Jan. 29, 2002, which followed George W. Bush's second State of the Union address and occurred only a few months after 9/11. The Dow jumped 145 points that day.

Under Obama's tenure, the Dow dropped following his first two major speeches in 2009 and 2010, but edged higher in 2011.

Here's a link to a chart from our corporate cousin MarketWatch that details the market's response to State of the Union speeches dating back to 1961.

Keeping Up With Jones - The Missourian: Union News on day true story

Posted: Wednesday, January 11, 2012 11:00 am | Updated: 8:34 am, Wed Jan 11, 2012.

I recently joined Twitter so I can send and receive tweets, which may or may not make a twit.

While I am not really sure why I joined, the only thing that is for certain is that I check the account all of the time.

I even installed an app on my phone so I can read what celebrities have to say about important things, including what they had for dinner, as long as they keep it under 144 characters.

I mostly follow comedians, just to keep my reading light, but I also follow a few baseball players, news sites and a handful of friends.

I started using the networking site just before Christmas, which is kind of ironic because on Christmas Day I began to "follow" several people and had several people follow me.

Those people I am following may or may not be false idols, so I am not sure where I stand with that commandment — and on the flip side, am I aiding and abetting mortal sins by having followers, or is that just semantics?

But for the most part, my followers should have nothing to worry about. First off, I have no intentions on leading them anywhere, and secondly, most of my followers aren't even people.

With Twitter, anyone can follow another person's tweets unless they are blocked. On almost a daily basis, I get a new follower, but those followers always attractive women (not as attractive as my girlfriend, of course) are fake and direct me to porn websites.

While I haven't clicked on the sites, it is pretty obvious that sites are porn from the "XXX" or "booty" in the site link.

I did consider clicking on one of the "booty" sites in hopes that I had a pirate following me, but common sense prevailed (for the first time ever) and I steered clear for fear of getting a (computer) virus.

Those followers don't seem to stick around long. My army of porn bots dwindles daily. I get a new follower every now and then, but they seem to be dropping me more than not, probably because I don't go to their "pool-sex" sites.

I have noticed that some people start to follow others just to get them to follow them. The initial follower then drops the followee after they begin being followed. Do you follow?

If I take any action more than reading others tweets, it most likely is a retweet of something hilarious, or newsworthy. I have had a couple original tweets, including my engagement announcement: "I didn't go to Jared but she still said 'yes' SheMightHaveSettled" and my famous: 'Santa is in St. Louis" that I tweeted while following St. Nick Dec. 25 the NORAD Santa Tracker. Neither of those were retweeted.

But for those who are unfamiliar with Twitter, let's dissect the first tweet — the statement "I didn't go to Jared but she still said 'yes' " is the actual tweet and it is followed by the (hash tag) "SheMightHaveSettled" which is the subject. There are never spaces in the subject, which can get very confusing.

I am pretty certain that the was chosen to begin each subject because it just isn't used enough on the keyboard. There are better choices, including an asterisk, but in order to get the most out of the computer keyboards, the fine people of Twitter thought it best to give that key more use. Maybe I should tweet about that.

I am not sure if I will use Twitter more often in the future or not, but if you would like to follow me, go ahead @jones_gregg YouMayBeMakingAMistake.

I would much rather have real people witness me make a fool of myself as I figure this stuff out than the dozens of porn sites that follow me now.

FishingWorld.com - News Center on day true story

(Jan. 28, 2012 - REDDING, CA.)...

The Oregon State University team of Zach MacDonald, of Willits, Calif. and William Sparks, of Corvallis, Ore. won the National Guard FLW College Fishing West Conference event on Lake Shasta Saturday with five bass weighing 9 pounds, 4 ounces. The victory earned the team $5,000.The win also helped them advance to the West Conference Regional Championship.

"We battled the wind all day today," said Sparks, a marine biology major. "We shot all over the place, every little nook we could find. The fishing was slow, and very tough. We were fishing really shallow today. We were marking a whole bunch of fish, but we just couldn't get them to bite. The fish that we did get were up in about 15 feet.

"We caught two fish right away," Sparks continued. "One with a drop-shot rig and one on a pumpkin football jig. Then it really slowed down for us. Our boat broke down and we had to use the trolling motor to come in a few minutes earlier than we would have liked to. But I guess it worked out for us."

"This morning we were able to find a little spot where it was calmer and we caught our first two, but after 30 minutes it just died," said MacDonald, a fisheries and wildlife major. "The wind was really a factor for most of the day and it threw us off some spots that we wanted to fish."

"Our motor broke down too," MacDonald went on to say. "We had to fish off of our trolling motor this afternoon, so we found a spot close to the marina. We were able to catch our last two fish back-to-back on our last casts of the day using green-pumpkin jigs. We're definitely looking forward to regionals."

Rounding out the top five teams and also advancing to the West Regional Championship are:

2nd: University of California-Santa Cruz Chris Rhoden and Sam Sayad, both of Santa Cruz, Calif. five bass 9-00 $1,500
3rd: Humboldt State University Hideaki Kubo, Arcata, Calif., and Ben Smith, Samoa, Calif. five bass 8-7 $1,000
4th: Eastern Washington University Jarred Walker, Cheney, Wash., and Robert Trukositz, Spokane, Wash. five bass 8-5 $1,000
5th: California State University-Long Beach Alex Cox and Justin Gangel, both of Long Beach, Calif. five bass 8-1 $1,000

The top five teams from each tournament qualify for the regional championship where the first-place team will win a Ranger 177TR bass boat with a 90-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard wrapped in school colors for their fishing club. The top five teams from each regional tournament advance to the national championship.

College Fishing is free to enter and FLW provides boats and drivers for each competing team along with travel allowances. All participants must be registered, full-time undergraduate students at a four-year college or university and members of a fishing club recognized by their college or university.

The next National Guard FLW College West Conference tournament is scheduled for Feb. 25 at Lake Havasu in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and is hosted by the Lake Havasu City Convention & Visitors Bureau.

W.E.'s a royal scandal! Madonna fails to read all about it | Film on day true story

Madonna's W.E.

Royals just wanna have fun ... Wallis (Andrea Riseborough) and Edward (James D'Arcy) in Madonna's W.E. Photograph: Sportsphoto Ltd/Allstar

  8. More on this film

In 1936, King Edward VIII abdicated to marry his lover, Wallis Simpson. They became the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

Style

Still from W.E. 9

Despite its critical panning, not everything about W.E. is terrible. The costumes are very nice. Andrea Riseborough gives a decent performance as Wallis – though admittedly the brittle, self-conscious dialogue is better suited to her character than to anyone else's. W.E. interweaves the story of the king and Mrs Simpson with the tribulations of a fictional New Yorker, Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish), who is obsessed with Wallis. She attends the 1998 auction of the Windsors' belongings at Sotheby's, hallucinating Wallis's ghost as she idly fondles a pug-shaped cushion. Meanwhile, her marriage to a nasty doctor collapses and she falls for the auction's security guard. Regrettably, the modern characters are so facile that they barely qualify as two-dimensional. They're one-dimensional: a collection of straight lines resolutely failing to go anywhere except the way you already know they're going.

Royalty

Still from W.E. 7

Critics have noticed that W.E. has a radio announcer in 1936 announce the death of King George III. That's two whole Georges out, plus a William, a Victoria and another Edward. A small mistake, but slapdash – and it's not alone. The paparazzi are shown chasing Wallis and Edward on a Mediterranean cruise, provoking headlines in British papers like: "Royal Scandal!" Though a picture of Wallis touching Edward's arm during that cruise in August 1936 was published outside Britain, the British newspapers famously covered the king's affair up. The king's friend, Lord Beaverbrook, convinced all his fellow newspapermen to agree to complete discretion. All they printed about that cruise was a passenger list with Wallis's name on it. British censors snipped more lurid reports out of foreign newspapers at customs. Consequently, most Britons had no idea about the affair until it came to abdication the following December.

Politics

Still from W.E. 4

The film dismisses the allegation that Wallis and Edward had sympathies with the Nazis. "Most of it is based on rumours," snaps Wally to her nasty doctor husband. "I thought doctors were into empirical evidence." It's not clear that screenwriters Madonna and Alek Keshishian know what "empirical" means for, if Wally wants evidence gathered through observation, there's plenty. For instance, a 1933 report by the Austrian ambassador that Edward said to him: "I hope and believe we will never fight another war but if we do, we must be on the winning side and that will be Germany, not the French". A public speech to the British Legion in 1935 in which he advised his audience to "stretch forth the hand of friendship to the Germans". A 1936 letter from the German ambassador to Adolf Hitler saying "King Edward, quite generally, feels warm sympathy for Germany". British Foreign Office papers suggesting that a Nazi plot to put Edward back on the throne when they invaded Britain was cooked up with Wallis's involvement. Wallis's notoriously dazzling smile on meeting Adolf Hitler in Germany in 1937. Edward's frequent Nazi salutes during that trip, and cheerful fraternisation with the likes of Josef Goebbels, Hermann Goering and Rudolf Hess. Edward's own admission in an article he wrote for the New York Daily News in 1966 that "along with too many other well-meaning people, I let my admiration for the good side of the German character dim what was being done to it by the bad". There you go, Madge: a whole heap of empirical evidence. And that's without even getting into the rumours, which go far further.

People

Still from W.E. 2

For this film, Edward (James D'Arcy) has been transformed into a brooding hunk. In real life, his relationship with Wallis was needy from his side, infantilising from hers. One close friend, Mrs Humphrey Butler, recalled a scene at a dinner party when the then Prince of Wales asked Wallis for a light. "Have you done your duty?" Wallis asked. "Little man gets on his haunches, puts up his hands and begs like a dog," remembered Mrs Butler. "She then lights his cigarette. Horrible to see." This wouldn't be cool, so instead the film shows them getting hopped up on champagne and Benzedrine before Wallis tucks her skirt into her knickers and dances with a shaven-headed black woman to the Sex Pistols' Pretty Vacant. Unlikely on several counts. Though Pretty Vacant would have made an apt title for this movie.

Verdict

Pretty, but vacant.

No Pacquiao-Mayweather bout in May on day true story

Manny Pacquiao won't fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. until November at the earliest, Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum said Monday. Arum said Mayweather is trying to stage his next fight May 5 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas without promising Pacquiao a 50-50 split of fight revenue. As a result, Mayweather "isn't in the picture" as Arum plans Pacquiao's next fight for June 9. "They don't want to fight in late May," Arum said of the Mayweather camp. "It's dead for May, so we should . . . let Mayweather fight someone else May 5 and we'll fight someone else June 9, and then let's get a signed contract for (Mayweather-Pacquiao) in November. That's a win-win for everybody."

However, there remains deep skepticism the super-fight will ever happen, given the long-standing animosity among Arum, Mayweather and his adviser, Al Haymon. (Los Angeles Times)

NCAA chief still in favor of BCS Final Four playoff

NCAA President Mark Emmert on Monday reiterated his support of a two-round, four-team BCS playoff to determine a national football champion.

Emmert said there are discussions about what he described as a Final Four model, which would've matched LSU against Stanford and Alabama vs. Oklahoma State this season with the winners advancing to the title game. Alabama defeated LSU 21-0 to avenge its lone loss and win the championship. Emmert said any change must be determined by the BCS members. (AP)

Cubs sign Trever Miller to minor league contract • The Chicago Cubs signed reliever Trever Miller to a one-year, $800,00 minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. The lefthander began last season with the Cardinals, going 0-1 with one save and a 4.02 ERA in 39 appearances before he was sent to the Blue Jays along with outfielder Colby Rasmus and two other pitchers in the three-team swap that brought four players to the Cardinals. He was released by Toronto three weeks later and signed with the Boston Red Sox for the rest of the season. (From news services)

Patterson signs minor league deal with Brewers • The Milwaukee Brewers signed outfielder Corey Patterson to a minor league contract. Patterson played 44 games for the Cardinals last season, batting .157 with three RBIs. (AP)

Rangers give manager Washington two-year extension • Texas manager Ron Washington, who has a 427-373 record in five seasons with the Rangers, signed a two-year contract extension through the 2014 season after leading the team to consecutive World Series, including last year's loss to the Cardinals. Date changed for baseball's Hall of Fame Classic • The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum said this year's Hall of Fame Classic will be played the Saturday before Father's Day in Cooperstown, N.Y. The first three Classics were held on Father's Day. So far, six Hall of Famers are slated to take part in the seven-inning legends game on June 16, with Hall of Famers Phil Niekro and ex-Cardinal Ozzie Smith returning as team captains. (AP)

CAS sets date for Contador verdict • The Court of Arbitration for Sport said it plans to publish its verdict in Alberto Contador's doping case on Monday. The Spanish cyclist is facing a two-year ban for testing positive for clenbuterol during the 2010 Tour de France. The three-time Tour champion said the clenbuterol came from contaminated beef that he ate during the race. (AP)

WPS suspends play for 2012 season • Women's Professional Soccer officials said the league won't play the 2012 season amid a legal dispute with an ousted owner. In October, the WPS terminated its South Florida franchise after clashing with owner Dan Borislow all season. A Florida judge ruled earlier this month that the league failed to follow its own dispute procedures when it terminated the franchise. Another court hearing is set for Wednesday. (AP)

NCBI ROFL: Mirror, mirror on my Facebook wall: effects of exposure to Facebook on self-esteem. | Discoblog on day true story

It's Facebook week on NCBI ROFL! All this week we'll be featuring papers about everyone's favorite social networking site. Enjoy!

"Contrasting hypotheses were posed to test the effect of Facebook exposure on self-esteem. Objective Self-Awareness (OSA) from social psychology and the Hyperpersonal Model from computer-mediated communication were used to argue that Facebook would either diminish or enhance self-esteem respectively. The results revealed that, in contrast to previous work on OSA, becoming self-aware by viewing one's own Facebook profile enhances self-esteem rather than diminishes it. Participants that updated their profiles and viewed their own profiles during the experiment also reported greater self-esteem, which lends additional support to the Hyperpersonal Model. These findings suggest that selective self-presentation in digital media, which leads to intensified relationship formation, also influences impressions of the self."

Newt Gingrich was Lost in Space at Florida Debate on day true story

COMMENTARY | Newt Gingrich's spokesman said Thursday night's GOP debate in Jacksonville, Fla., was a "push." Who is he trying to kid? Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won the night in a harrowing display of debate splendor that had the well-spoken, factually armed former speaker tied in a knot.

The Ticket reported Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond tried to sell the idea of a debate draw to reporters traveling with the campaign, but it seemed to fall flat. Rightfully so. Gingrich did not have a strong appearance, failing to counter damaging attacks from Romney and Rick Santorum, who straddled him on the stage. Ron Paul provided nothing more than comic relief and proven -- beyond a shadow of a doubt -- that he is unfit to be president and merely riding a 15 minutes of fame tour through these debates.

One of the former House speaker's weakest moments was the defense of his plan to build a permanent moon colony by the end of his second term as president. He is right in one respect: America needs another grand idea. Gingrich cited President John F. Kennedy's call to space in the early 1960s as an example, but that was Kennedy's moment for Kennedy's time. America needs another grand idea, but not something as outlandish as a multitrillion-dollar expense of building moon colony. After all, we just finished building the international space station and the U.S. doesn't even possess a working orbiter at the moment.

The Washington Post reported Gingrich talked Wednesday to more than 500 residents of Cocoa Beach, Fla., about his plans to develop the next great space exploration program. His idea met with resounding approval from a community largely dependent on America's space program for their jobs. During the debate, Romney accused him of pandering local issues as he campaigns. Romney got that part wrong. Candidates always talk to local crowds about very local issues to win their votes (and their wallet).

Regardless of the space discussion, Gingrich did not have a good night. My heart says Romney won the debate, but I cannot dismiss the powerful performance of Santorum. Romney will carry Florida next week, but the three-way race will continue as they all move to Nevada for the next votes. That is unless Santorum runs out of money in the meantime.

Ringworm in pets - Gilroy Dispatch: Pet Blog on day true story

Posted: Thursday, January 26, 2012 12:16 pm | Updated: 12:18 pm, Fri Jan 27, 2012.

It may be surprising for some to learn that the skin infection known as ringworm, or dermatophytosis, is not actually a worm or parasite at all, but a fungus. The lesion will not always be in the shape of a ring, but it will appear scaly in the center with a red irritated color on the periphery.

"Household pets generally pick up the disease from other animals. Where the infection occurs on the skin there will be a bald patch, but sometimes they may just have a few broken hairs," says Dr. Leon Russell, professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences.

Ringworm is highly contagious and can pass from person to person either through direct contact, through contact with an infected object, contact with an infected pet or infected soil. Humans can contract ringworm from animals very easily by touching the infected area directly or through contact with objects which have been exposed contaminated with the fungus or its spores.

Animal ringworm types, usually from a dog, cat, or rodent are more likely to be transmitted to young children. With children it is often found in the scalp region.

"Fungi that mostly live in human skin are called 'anthropophilic', those that live on animals are called 'zoophilic', and those that prefer to live in soil are called 'geophilic' fungi," explains Russell.

The anthropophilic ringworm is mostly seen in developing countries such as Africa, or parts of Asia by human to human transmission. Many times this occurs from sharing hairbrushes or combs, and unless someone's immune system is highly compromised then the disease is not life threatening.

"Tinea pedis, or athlete's foot, is the most common form of ringworm found in humans and the most difficult to treat. The rash most often appears in the moist areas between the toes, though the rest of the foot can be infected as well. Itching and burning are typical symptoms," says Russell.

Community swimming pools, used towels, health clubs, steam rooms and showers are common areas where athlete's foot can be contracted.

"Rarely humans can transmit the disease to animals. An example of this might be if a person with athletes foot comes home, takes their shoes off, and scratches or rubs ol' Fido with their bare foot," says Russell.

Livestock such as cattle or horses are more likely to have ringworm when they are kept inside their stalls in the winter because of the rubbing up against wood and other stall materials.

"These cases are seen more in the Northern parts of the United States where the weather is colder. Generally, when the weather becomes warmer again and the animals are turned outside into the sunshine of pastures, the disease begins to clear up," says Russell.

In horses ringworm is seen usually in places where rubbing may occur, such as where a saddle or bridle might touch. Adults are more likely to contract ringworm from a horse rather than children, due to occupational exposure and handling.

The effects of ringworm tend to be superficial ones of appearance, though, if not treated in animals it can easily spread and cause scar tissue.

Some people, mostly children, who contract ringworm from a pet can sometimes have a reaction with their skin tissue resulting in bulgy lesion-looking patches on the skin called Kerions. These are more severe in appearance compared to the normal reaction and can be very upsetting for the person.

"The treatment for ringworm in humans or animals is usually going to involve a topical medication. Oral medication may be needed if the ringworm is chronic, and therefore can sometimes take up to three or four months to clear. It is certainly not a reason to get rid of a dog or cat because it can be treated," says Russell.

"The most common fungal species that may cause ringworm in dogs and cats are Microsporum canis. If you suspect that your pet has ringworm, a veterinarian will be able to determine if that is the case or not by examining the animal under special lighting wherein the fungus glows," explains Russell.

If a pet is diagnosed with ringworm it is best to take steps to disinfect objects that the animal has been in contact with, using chemicals like chlorine diluted in water.

It is important to bring your pet, especially young pets, in for their vaccinations and checkups to ensure that diseases such as ringworm are not causing any problems.
