This family’s favourite kitchen tool is a computer on day true story

Image

The most important piece of equipment in Heather Msi's kitchen is the HP touchscreen computer.

With the tap of a knuckle, she can access a stockpile of treasured recipes.

Nigella Lawson and Jamie Oliver's dishes are so well-loved that they get their own folders alongside ones labelled "My Grandmother" and "Family."

Handwritten and heirloom recipes have been scanned into files so they're protected from cooking damage. Others have been typed in. Msi no longer has to prop open cookbooks and flip through them with messy hands.

The recipes stand at the ready to satisfy the Msi family's every craving. Heather cooks everything from pad Thai and Chinese to Sunday roasts, lasagna, pizza, shepherd's pie, black velvet cake and mango chutney.

Her husband Vusi is appropriately appreciative.

"It will be a Saturday afternoon and I'll be working on the house and Heather will say `What do you want for dinner?' " he says. "I'll go to the computer and pick something and the thing I tend to pick the most often is Nigella Lawson. She has these pork chops in plum sauce that I love. Also, I happen to be madly, deeply, violently in love with Nigella Lawson.

"I've got to say I'm a lucky guy because I'll say 'I want that' and my wife will make it."

Vusi, Heather and their 19-year-old son, Kenny, live in the Mill Pond area of Richmond Hill. Vusi, 48, is a litigation lawyer who specializes in medical malpractice. Heather, 47, runs his office. She usually gets off work at 4 p.m. and starts making dinner around 6.

It usually takes about 30 minutes to prep dinner and 30 to 45 minutes to cook it. Barbecuing is a year-round option.

Tonight, a Monday, Heather asks her son to make pasta and tomato sauce packed with garden vegetables. He took the one-year culinary skills program at George Brown College and is working toward his chef's papers at the Richmond Hill Culinary Arts Centre.

"No point in having a chef in the house if you're not going to get him to do the hard stuff," points out Heather. "Plus we planted all the stuff in the garden so he could do all this."

It's 6:15 p.m. and Kenny gets scoobi do noodles from the cold cellar. He chops red and green chiles, red, green and yellow tomatoes and red onions. He uses a Jamie Oliver Flavour Shaker to crush, grind and blend his minced rosemary and oregano, and adds Classico Four Cheese tomato sauce and leftover broccoli to the vibrant sauce.

On the back deck, Heather turns on her Weber Genesis for the hot Italian sausages she bought from Sue's Fine Foods and Catering.

Suddenly there's a commotion in the front hallway.

Heather's nieces Brenda and Candace Robbins have arrived to take her to square dancing. Oops. She forgot. The sisters can't stay for dinner but want to try the lemon squares Kenny made today.

"I had part of one," admits Heather.

"Part of one? Let me have the other part," replies Brenda.

The Robbins sisters approve of the lemon squares, but they're in short supply so Heather gives them garden peppers instead.

"Sorry — it gets a little hectic around here sometimes," she says cheerfully, adding that friends and family members who live nearby routinely pop in for meals.

The Msi family has lived here since 1993 and has been renovating since 2002, turning a one-storey house with a detached garage to a two-storey home with an attached garage and basement cold cellar.

"This is where everybody shops," jokes Heather. There's a stockpile of Coke, Pepsi and Canada Dry ginger ale, homemade preserves (beets, dill pickles, jam, mango chutney), cooking oil, vinegar, pasta and organic rice and flour bought in bulk and transferred to Tupperware.

"Our two weaknesses are potato chips and pop," she concedes.

Not to mention chocolate cakes and other dishes created by Nigella Lawson. Heather and Vusi lined up at Indigo last November to get her autograph.

"For Heather. With love, Nigella," wrote Lawson on their copy of Feast.

"For Kenny. With love, Nigella," wrote Lawson on Kitchen.

They could get only two autographs, so Vusi didn't get one.

The Msi kitchen is painted "crepe" and has white appliances. There's a Jenn-Air oven (five gas burners are built into the nearby countertop), Panasonic microwave and Miele dishwasher.

The white Fisher & Paykel fridge (a New Zealand brand bought at Tasco Appliances) is well-organized. The freezer holds, among other things, Breyers ice cream (strawberry, butterscotch ripple and maple walnut) and a cool drawer for ice cube trays.

"Want to see Tupper Town?" asks Vusi.

The movable kitchen island is neatly stocked with Tupperware in multiple colours and shapes.

"I'm the queen of Tupperware," agrees Heather, who loves the brand's lifetime warranty and unique pieces like a pickle keeper and broccoli and lettuce storage containers,

The spacious kitchen opens into a family room dominated by a 55-inch television.

"We have to confess that we eat while we watch TV," says Heather.

The formal dining room is reserved for Sunday nights when Vusi's parents come for dinner. They go there every Wednesday night. Thursday is leftover night.

The Msis have been married for 25 years and together for 31, ever since meeting as teenagers through Boy Scouts.

Heather's father and grandparents are from Buxton, a town in Derbyshire, England. She was raised by her single mom ("an absolutely horrible chef") and Scottish grandmother in Toronto and then Richmond Hill.

Childhood meals revolved around boiled food and frozen meat, so Heather can tolerate only fresh meat now, preferably from Sue's or Bruno's Fine Foods.

Vusi was born in South Africa and lived in Swaziland and Zambia before coming here when he was 8.

"We had, I would say, a very unremarkable life in terms of what we ate as kids," recalls Vusi, adding that his mom is a good cook. "We ate beef, pork, chicken, lots of vegetables."

His main culinary role is to be the "turkey chef" at Christmas, cooking up to three birds for the clan. Tonight he putters around the backyard while Heather and Kenny make dinner. He's also watching the weather and hoping to eat outside.

"I'm a true hoser when it comes to weather," admits Vusi, minutes before it starts sprinkling.

The family switches gears and readies laptop Tupperware trays for the TV room. Kenny has a blue one, Vusi yellow and Heather white. There's a brief tussle over whether to watch Monday Night Football or Jeopardy. Football wins.

Heather and Vusi figure they spend about $650 a month on groceries — more in December for obvious reasons. They frequent Bruno's, Sue's, No Frills and Loblaws, try to buy local and organic and avoid anything from China.

They go to the Holland Marsh for potatoes and carrots, St. Lawrence Market for kitchen gadgets, Kozlik's mustard, cheese and back bacon on a bun, and Kensington Market for European Meats, more cheese and white cracked corn (grits).

They treated themselves to Sabatino's Ristorante in Toronto for their 25th wedding anniversary in August. They used to be regulars at Swiss Chalet, but now tend to get "beautiful roast chickens" at the supermarket.

They eat out only about once a month and it comes as no surprise to hear Vusi explain why: "The food's never as good as you can get at home."

News: Mozambique proposes law to axe VAT on animal feed raw materials on day true story

A new law proposed by Mozambique's government plans to make raw materials used for the production of animal feed to be exempt from VAT.&

Mozambique's Association of Poultry Farmers has welcomed the move. However the chairman, Emílio Tinga, told local newspaper Notícias that the association's poultry farmers had expected much more, specifically for VAT exemption to be extended to the entire production process, including the import of equipment.

The feed accounts for 60% of the cost of raising chickens, said Tinga, so cutting the cost of feed would be a major relief for poultry farmers. Last week the government decided to exempt animal feed from Value Added Tax (VAT). Since VAT is charged at the rate of 17 per cent, this decision should lead to a significant reduction in the price of feed.

The VAT exemption could save the poultry industry, said Rui Brandao, of the animal feed company Higest, but the final decision on altering the VAT code lies, not with the government, but with the country's parliament, the Assembly of the Republic. The government bill exempting animal feed from VAT goes before the next sitting of the Assembly, scheduled to begin on 24 October.

The Origin Of The Word 'Epilepsy' : NPR on day true story

Humans have long suffered from epilepsy, the neurological disorder hallmarked by sudden seizures. Medical historian Howard Markel discusses the condition's names through the millenia, from the "sacred disease" of ancient texts to its description as "the falling sickness" in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.

IRA FLATOW, host: Up next, it's time for our monthly episode of Science Diction, where we explore the origins of scientific words with Howard Markel, professor of the history of medicine at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Welcome to SCIENCE FRIDAY. Welcome back.

HOWARD MARKEL: Hello, Ira.

FLATOW: Tell us what the word is today. Is it...

MARKEL: The word today is epilepsy.

FLATOW: Epilepsy.

MARKEL: A very odd word. It's - as we know today, of course, it's an abnormal firing of neurons in the brain that leads to some abnormal movements of one part of the body or another, depending on what part of the brain is affected. But for a long time, that disease was terribly feared, and many people thought it was a sacred disease, that somehow people were struck by either a god or a devil to have this uncontrollable movement. And it's very frightening to watch, actually, and so people were very nervous when they saw other people seize.

FLATOW: Mmm. It seems like, at one point or another, Hippocrates described every disease and disorder out there.

MARKEL: He did. You could always rely on Hippocrates. You know, there is a Greek - word - there's always, there's many Greek words, actually.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

MARKEL: But this one, epilambanem - in len, there's epilepsia - and that literally means to seize or to be taken hold of. And Hippocrates wrote a wonderful treatise called "On the Sacred Diseases." And he said, you know, he described epilepsy to a T because he was such a good observer, but he said this disease is no more sacred than any other disease.

It's affecting some part of the brain, and he explained it in the way he understood the body in terms of four bodily humors and so on. But he was the first one to actually strike out against it being a part of evil or doing bad or a weakness of character or something like that. And he did not like that name. Later on, it became the falling sickness, and that's what it was called for millennia. And, really, even in the English language, for a long time it was referred to as the falling sickness, but that all changed around 1578.

FLATOW: Mm-hmm. I'm Ira Flatow. This is SCIENCE FRIDAY from NPR, talking with Howard Markel about the definition of the word epilepsy. When did anybody - you say it's a falling sickness. Is that because they were able to define it as a real illness?

MARKEL: Well, yeah. I mean, now epilepsy, we know, is really many disorders...

FLATOW: Right.

MARKEL: ...40 or 50 disorders that include seizures. But when people suffered from what used to be called grand mal seizures or, you know, generalized seizures, they would often fall down. And it struck them, and they fell down or they started seizing. And it was not a bad name. But Henry Lyte in 1578 - he was a famous British botanist - translated another botanist book called "Cruydeboeck" by Rembert Dodoens. He was a Flemish botanist. And there were some recipes of how to treat seizures in there. And Lyte preferred the word epilepsy to falling sickness, and so he used that translation. But, you know, it took another couple of decades.

And it wasn't - of course, you know, if you talk about the Greeks and the Bible, then you have to have Shakespeare. Shakespeare described epilepsy in 1599 in his famous play "Julius Caesar." Now, Julius Caesar did have epilepsy, and Cassius describes him as having, quote, "the falling sickness." But what's really neat is, about a few years later in 1603, in "Othello," Shakespeare describes him as raging and foaming as if he has fallen into epilepsy. And, again, the following year in 1604, in "King Lear," Kent talks to Oswald and says, a plague upon your epileptic visage. That would be a good thing in the playground to say to someone you don't like. But after that, epilepsy really took hold, and it became the way we describe this falling sickness.

FLATOW: Yeah. And a lot of famous historical people had it.

MARKEL: Yeah, epilepsy, or at least seizures. You know, there was Julius Caesar, Napoleon, Dostoyevsky, my favorite - one of my favorite novelists. And, in fact, he gave his character Raskolnikov in "Crime and Punishment" epilepsy, as well. And probably the most humorous if you're an Abbott and Costello fan, Bud Abbott had epilepsy.

FLATOW: Had no idea.

MARKEL: Yeah. He was not on first when it came to that problem.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

FLATOW: I'm glad you said it and I didn't, because I would have.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

FLATOW: Do we know, actually, what causes epilepsy?

MARKEL: Well, it depends on what type of epilepsy you have and what part of the brain has been affected. There are a number of causes. For example, if you injure your brain, say you hit your head against something or - and you caused some scarring of the brain tissue, that could be a cause. But so, too, can tumors or metabolic disorders. There are a number of causes that cause the syndrome of epilepsy.

FLATOW: Is it an easy word to research?

MARKEL: Well, yeah, it is. I mean, you know, you start with the Oxford English Dictionary, as I always do, and then you work your way back, and then you start finding out who these people are. So, Hippocrates is easy, and I had known...

FLATOW: Yeah.

MARKEL: ..."On the Sacred Diseases" for my days in graduate school. But I got to meet Henry Lyte along the way, and it's always a great excuse to read Shakespeare.

FLATOW: Yeah. And it's interesting that Shakespeare did incorporate it.

MARKEL: He did. And there's so many, I mean, he was such a wonderful observer of human nature and things that affected human beings. And so there's lots of medicine and science to be described in the plays of Shakespeare.

FLATOW: Yeah. Well, Howard, once again, you've done it again.

MARKEL: Well, thank you, Ira.

FLATOW: When you figure out what that is, you let me know.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

MARKEL: Yeah. We'll see who's on first then, huh?

FLATOW: All right. Have a good weekend. Howard Markel is professor of the history of medicine at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, also director of the Center for the History of Medicine there. And if you want to read more about epilepsy, check out our website. It's sciencefriday.com. And we'll give you a whole bunch of stuff there.

Arizona to host GOP presidential debate in December on day true story

by Dan Nowicki - Sept. 30, 2011 12:00 AM
The Arizona Republic

Arizona Republicans are moving forward with plans for a Dec. 1 GOP presidential debate, securing CNN as a national media partner for the event and continuing to search for a venue for the event, which backers hope will raise the state's profile in the 2012 White House race.

Whether the Republican National Committee officially sanctions the debate remains to be seen, although Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said the event will go on regardless. Earlier this month, RNC officials gave their tentative blessing to an Arizona debate, providing the state Republican Party could put together a proposal that "meets the guidelines of the debate committee and receives their approval." The Arizona GOP is continuing to pursue official RNC status for the debate, Brewer said.

"I would assume that . . . they would want to sanction it, but it doesn't really matter at this point in time," Brewer told The Arizona Republic.

Brewer, the main force behind the drive to secure an Arizona presidential debate, announced the latest developments on Thursday. She said Arizona is the perfect place to debate issues such as illegal immigration, border security, the housing crisis and states' rights.

"The great news, if I can say, is we've got the debate on CNN and it's going to be a worldwide newscast - and it couldn't get any better than that," Brewer said. "I am just thrilled that Arizona will be on the forefront of all these issues that are facing the United States. We've been leaders on a lot of it. I'm just thrilled that we were able to close the deal today (Thursday), and I am going to look forward to December."

In a written statement, a CNN executive called Arizona "a key state that will play a pivotal role in helping Republicans choose their presidential nominee."

"CNN is honored to provide voters in Arizona and around the country an opportunity to hear the GOP candidates present their vision for the future," said Sam Feist, CNN's Washington bureau chief and senior vice president.

The idea of an Arizona debate emerged at the same time as Brewer's discussions with the RNC over the date of the state's presidential preference election. Originally, Brewer was considering moving the date of the state's preference election to January in order to make Arizona a more important player in the primary process, but eventually opted to leave it on Feb. 28.

"When I talked to the RNC, we talked about the debate and we talking about moving (the date), but they really weren't tied together," Brewer said.

The Republic's request for comment on the latest Arizona debate developments from the RNC was not successful.

The debate will be held at 6 p.m. on Dec. 1, a Thursday. The date is nine days before a Dec. 10 debate in Des Moines, Iowa, the state that holds the nation's first presidential caucuses. That debate is sponsored by ABC News and the Iowa Republican Party.

Brewer said local debate organizers are working to secure a venue and hope to have one as soon as possible. She said the debate likely will be held in the Phoenix area because it would be accessible for the participating candidates.

"We want to showcase our capital city, I think," Brewer said. "That's what I would like."

Arizona Democrats reacted to news of an Arizona GOP debate by pointing to an incident during a Sept. 22 GOP debate in which some audience members booed a gay serviceman who asked a question about the repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

"If the recent presidential debates have proved anything, it's that out-of-touch, tone-deaf behavior is alive and well in the Republican Party," said Luis Heredia, the Arizona Democratic Party's executive director. "We look forward to seeing how Arizona's Tea Party can possibly top booing a member of the military."

Nicolas Cage on 'The Expendables 2' and 'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance' on day true story

& Stallone wants Cage for The Expendables 2, but Cage says he hasn't actually talked to him about it yet.

& Nicolas Cage is in Toronto right now promoting the film Trespass, which premieres at the festival. At the festival press conference, Cage addressed the rumors of his casting in the growing ensemble of The Expendables 2.

&

& "I haven't really pursued that," Cage said. "I don't know much about it except what I read on the internet. Stallone is somebody that I like and he's always been very friendly to me over the years so I would consider it but I haven't had any formal discussions about it."

&

& So Stallone wants him. Cage would consider it and he likes Stallone. Somebody set them up on eHarmony or something so we can get Cage's long flowing hair blowing in the wind while he runs from explosions with the gang.

&

& This was also my first chance to follow up with Cage on Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance since the trailer hit. I agree with Ghost Rider that it's awesome when he goes to the bathroom. I imagine the studio might not think peeing fire is so awesome, but cage said it wasn't a fight.

&

& "No, no, they knew what they were getting into when they signed on," he told me after the press photo call.

Who deserves 2011 PGA Tour Player of the Year honors? - Devil Ball Golf - Golf Blog on day true story

Who deserves 2011 PGA Tour Player of the Year honors?

With the conclusion of the Tour Championship, we're at a natural break point for the PGA Tour. So why not take a moment to reflect back on the best moments of this year? It was a time when unknowns seized the stage and unbelievable drama resulted in some of the best tournaments in years. Finally, we'll wrap things up with five who have a shot at taking home the tour's Player or the Year award.

(Note: Rory McIlroy wasn't included on out list because he's not a full-time PGA Tour member.)

Luke Donald: If this award was given to a player based solely on his consistency during the season, Luke Donald would probably win in a landslide. Throw out a missed cut in his first event in the season and the Englishman's worst finish, on American soil, was a T-45 at the U.S. Open. Every other tournament he played in this year saw him  finish inside the top-18. Winner of the Accenture Match Play -- an event where he never saw the 18th hole all week -- he also had 13 top-10 finishes in 2011. Another tour win would have turned the POY race into a rout.

Keegan Bradley: The kid from Vermont had a dream season in his rookie year on the PGA Tour. He's already wrapped up the Rookie of the Year award, but for the first time in the history of the tour, we could see the ROY take home the POY. OK, I'll stop with the abbreviations. Bradley captured his first tour victory in a playoff at the HP Byron Nelson Championship, and followed it up with, what else, another playoff victory later in the year at the PGA Championship. He's enjoying one of the greatest seasons by a rookie we've ever seen, and based on the quality of his two victories, he certainly has a shot to take home the tour's top honor.

Webb Simpson: There was a time earlier this year where you had to wonder if Webb Simpson was ever going to win on tour. Following a gut-wrenching playoff defeat to Bubba Watson, that included a one-stroke penalty for his ball moving after addressing a putt, you figured karma would pay him back. It certainly did three months later, as Simpson won the Wyndham ... and then promptly rolled his good fortune into a playoff win at the Deutsche Bank. He came oh-so-close to taking home the FedEx Cup, and with two wins this season, he has to be part of the equation.

Bubba Watson: Another member of the multiple wins club, Watson defeated Phil Mickelson early in the season at the Farmers Insurance, and followed it up four months later with a win at the Zurich Classic, thereby cementing his place as the best American golfer for a short time. Watson erratic play late in the season -- he only posted on top-20 finish in his final 12 starts -- could be a mark against him. Even still, it's hard to pick on a guy with two quality wins.

Steve Stricker: The most unassuming guy on the PGA Tour certainly had a nice season. For the third year in a row, Stricker was a multiple tour winner, capturing the Memorial against one of the strongest fields in the game, and then following it up one month later with a dramatic win at the John Deere. His consistency was present again in 2011, but a herniated disk in his neck ruined what could have been an even better year.

We've got our preference, but we'll let you decide. So who's your pick? Got another nominee? Go!

Lille midfielder Joe Cole targets England recall on day true story

Joe Cole is relishing his first-team opportunity with Lille and is hoping for a successful year with club and country.

Joe Cole celebrates his strike against Lorient

• Lille 1-1 Lorient

Cole, on loan from Liverpool, wants to help the club retain their Ligue 1 title and is hopeful a successful campaign can earn him an England recall.

Cole has made an immediate impact in France, scoring a wonderful first goal for the club in Saturday's draw with Lorient, and feels he made the right decision to move abroad.

"I really wanted to come here," he told L'Equipe. "You have to make choices in your life, and this wasn't the easiest for me, but it excited me. Firstly, we are playing for the title, and also it's a young team of good guys who play good football."

Cole has slotted into the side in a wide role initially but harbours hopes of operating as a central playmaker as the season progresses.

"I like playing in the middle, with the freedom to dictate play," he said. "For now I am on the wing, opposite Eden Hazard and linking up with Dimitri Payet.

"The idea, in time, is to come into the central three and direct our attacks from a bit deeper. That's where I started, it's natural to me."

The 29-year-old has not played for his country since last summer's World Cup but he said: "I hope Fabio Capello watches Ligue 1. If I can get a recall to the national team, I'll be the happiest guy around but, firstly, I want to play regularly and try to help Lille win a trophy."

What is Sonic the Hedgehog Without a Sega Console? on day true story

What is Sonic the Hedgehog Without a Sega Console? In today's blue and blurry edition of Speak Up on Kotaku, commenter Monsieur.Froid suggests that Sonic the Hedgehog worked much better as a console mascot than a multiplatform star.

I think one of the biggest problems with Sonic and the current Sonic games is that he doesn't represent anything anymore. In the 90s, Sonic was a symbol for Sega. He was the mascot for the Genesis, moved on and tried to keep the Saturn afloat. The arguably last great Sonic game was Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast, which was, again, a Sega system. He was their exclusive. Nintendo had Mario, PlayStation had Spyro and Crash, and Sega? Sega had Sonic. Sure, there was the character from NiGHTS, but how many people remember that in comparison to who remembers Sonic and Mario?

Nowadays, Sonic is just a character left hanging in the wind. Sony has Nathan Drake, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, Solid Snake (who happens to be more fluid in terms of mascot allegiances, but still really stands strong with Sony) and Kratos. Microsoft as the Gears of War guys and Master Chief. Nintendo still runs strong with Mario, Samus and Kirby. Among all of these, we still have Sonic, and while he's played on all of the systems, it seems like Nintendo has made a home for him on the Wii.

Sonic isn't his own character anymore. He's just...a latchkey kid.

About Speak Up on Kotaku: Our readers have a lot to say, and sometimes what they have to say has nothing to do with the stories we run. That's why we have a forum on Kotaku called Speak Up. That's the place to post anecdotes, photos, game tips and hints, and anything you want to share with Kotaku at large. Every weekday we'll pull one of the best Speak Up posts we can find and highlight it here.

Salespeople at three Bob's Discount Furniture stores join union - 2011-09-28 13:47:19 on day true story

Clint Engel -- Furniture Today, September 28, 2011

MANCHESTER, Conn. — Salespeople at three Bob's Discount Furniture stores in Connecticut have voted to unionize and elections in other Bob's stores in the Northeast could be coming.

In voting held Aug. 15 at Bob's stores in Manchester and Orange, Conn., employees voted 21-7 and 13-6, respectively, to join the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 919. Another vote at Bob's in Stamford, Conn., was held Sept. 23, with the union coming out on top 6-5, said Mark Espinosa, Local 919 president.

Espinosa said Bob's employees complained to the union that "commission formulas were being rearranged" and insurance costs were becoming unmanageable. Some said they would even be happy if the UFCW could get them a few hours of a minimum wage on slow Sundays, just to help cover their costs, he said.

"I think what happened was employees, including many who had been around for many years, (were concerned about) some changes in some policies and the way management was dealing with workers, especially since the company was sold," Espinosa said.

Ted English, CEO of the Manchester, Conn.-based retailer, could not be reached for comment.

The Top 100 company, founded in 1991 by Bob Kaufman and Gene Rosenberg, sold a majority stake in February 2005 to private equity firm Saunders, Karp & Megrue, which was later acquired by Apax Partners.

Despite the weak economy, Bob's has been expanding steadily, racking up sales gains for years. The company is No. 15 on Furniture/Today's Top 100 with estimated 2010 sales of $584.6 million in 2010 at 40 stores in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island. In May, it opened its first two Washington, D.C.-area stores.

Jerry Epperson, industry analyst and managing director of Richmond, Va.-based Mann, Armistead & Epperson said the move to unionized a commissioned sales force is unusual and he couldn't think of another example in the furniture industry.

"I've seen over and over again delivery drivers unionized or warehouse men unionized, but I can not remember ever seeing a case where the floor salespeople have been unionized," he said. "I don't know how you unionize commissioned employees."

Espinosa conceded that this is an unusual case for the UFCW, and that he's used to bargaining for specific dollar wages and benefits. In the Bob's case, the bargaining could be around the commission percentage as well as establishing some sort of base wage, he said.

"There are a lot of things we can do to maybe ease their (insurance) burden," he added.

Asked if any other Bob's stores in Connecticut were up for election, Espinosa said the union had tested the waters at other locations but doesn't see sufficient interest yet. He did say sister unions in other states, however, have sought elections, adding that believed UFCW local in Massachusetts had some Bob's elections coming up in mid-October.

The organizing director for Local 1445 in Massachusetts could not be reached for comment.

Espinosa said the organizing process for the three Connecticut stores is just beginning, and that the union has notified Bob's and its attorney and is waiting for dates to begin bargaining.

Stocks ending gloomy 3rd quarter on a weak note - Business - Stocks & economy on day true story

& Stocks fell Friday, putting the market on track to end its worst quarter since the peak of the financial crisis.&

The Dow Jones industrial average is down 74 points, or 0.7 percent, at 11,080 at 12:45 p.m. Eastern time. The Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq have all lost more than 10 percent this quarter, the first time that's happened since the financial crisis crested at the end of 2008.

Markets have been wracked this summer by growing fears about a possible default by Greece and the increasing likelihood of a global recession. Uneven economic data have touched off sudden bouts of buying and selling.

Seven of the S&P's 10 industry groups lost ground Friday. Financial companies fell the most, 2 percent. The three groups that rose are industries that tend to be more resilient to weak economic conditions: utilities, consumer staples and health care.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 11, or 1 percent, to 1,149. The Nasdaq composite index dropped 25, or 1 percent, to 2,456.

The S&P 500 index is down 13 percent since July 1, the start of the third quarter. That's the biggest quarterly drop since the three months ended Dec. 31, 2008, when global financial markets seized up. Excluding that period, the S&P has not dropped this much in a quarter for nine years.

"The market has really seen some damage this quarter," said Mike Hurley, portfolio manager of Highland Trend Following Fund.

The weakness appears to be the start of a longer decline, Hurley said, because bonds are gaining value and interest rates are low. Traders also are selling commodities such as oil for which demand would fall during an economic downturn. "Lower interest rates and commodity prices are definitely an indication that the market thinks economic activity is going to be weak," Hurley said.

Stocks in France, England and Germany fell on more signs of division between European leaders. Germany and France proposed managing their shared currency through meetings of nations' leaders, rather than by a central bureaucracy. The chief of the existing bureaucracy balked at the proposal.

Persistent squabbling over financial policy has been a major obstacle to achieving a lasting solution to Europe's debt crisis. France and Germany, the currency union's strongest economies, want countries to coordinate their spending and borrowing more closely. Others see that as a threat to sovereignty.

Many European leaders and traders appear convinced that Greece will default in the coming weeks or months. Greece's lenders and neighbors are preparing as best they can to prevent that from causing a worldwide financial panic.

As a result, traders have reacted strongly to news and rumors out of Europe about how the crisis is being addressed. Markets gyrated wildly this summer in some of the most volatile trading on record. The Dow Jones industrial average swung more than 100 points in more than half of the trading days this quarter.

Traders also have made big moves in response to U.S. economic data, which has mostly suggested a slowdown. A recession in the U.S. looks increasingly likely, mainly because of Europe's struggles and signs of weakness in developing countries like China that have been driving global economic growth.

The government said Friday U.S. consumers spent slightly more in August, but earned less for the first time in nearly two years. That suggests that people are tapping their savings to pay for costlier gasoline and offset lost wages. The savings rate fell to its lowest level since late 2009.

Ingersoll-Rand plunged 14 percent, the most of any stock in the S&P 500 index, after cutting its profit forecast for the third and fourth quarters. The machinery maker said North American sales of climate-control and security products have been weaker than expected.

Micron Technology Inc. fell 12 percent after the chipmaker disappointed investors with a quarterly loss. Analysts had expected a profit. Sales were hurt as the company transitions to selling a newer array of memory chips.

The owners of the Dow Jones industrial average and the S&P indexes are in advanced talks to combine their businesses in a joint venture, according to several news reports Friday. A combination would put the world's most closely watched financial market indicators into one operation.

McGraw-Hill Cos., which owns the S&P Indices, and CME Group Inc., which owns the Dow Jones industrial average and other Dow Jones-branded indexes, are talking about creating a merged business that would be managed by McGraw-Hill, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Released on March 29, the CD was produced by Daniel Gibson and is based on a comic book story written by script writer Steven O'Connell (BloodRayne, Dark 48). The band asked comic artist Romano Molenaar (Witchblade, Darkness, X-Men) to draw the characters and scenery of "The Unforgiving", which was made available via Sony Music in Continental Europe and Roadrunner Records in the U.S., U.K. and Ireland, Japan and Australia.

"The Unforgiving" track listing:

05. Fire And Ice
06. Iron
07. Where Is The Edge
08. Sinéad

WITHIN TEMPTATION guitarist Robert Westerholt recently announced that he will step down from touring duties in order to focus on taking care of the three children he has with the band's lead singer, Sharon den Adel. His replacement on stage is Stefan Helleblad, who has been working with the band behind the scenes for a few years.

DEVILDRIVER/COAL CHAMBER frontman Dez Fafara has recorded guest vocals for a new SOULFLY song, to be featured on the band's new studio album, due in early 2012 via Roadrunner Records.

Fafara posted the following message (along with a picture of him and SOULFLY frontman Max Cavalera) via Twitter: "I just co-wrote and sang with Max Cavalera on the heaviest track I've heard from SOULFLY ever. RESPECT."

SOULFLY's follow-up to 2010's "Omen" is currently being recorded at a Phoenix, Arizona studio with producer Chris "Zeuss" Harris, who has previously worked with CHIMAIRA, HATEBREED, ALL THAT REMAINS, THE ACACIA STRAIN, BORN OF OSIRIS and SHADOWS FALL, among others. The band's new drummer, David Kinkade (BORKNAGAR, ARSIS, MALEVOLENT CREATION), described the group's new material on his Facebook page as "crushing, fast thrash, blasting, tribal and fueled by extreme burrito fury. . . The record is sounding fucking SICK. Thrashy as fuck... totally 'Arise' [referring to SEPULTURA's classic 1991 album] on crack and speed."

Kinkade joined SOULFLY a few weeks ago following the departure of the group's longtime skinsman Joe Nunez. Kinkade says, "Max [Cavalera, SOULFLY/ex-SEPULTURA frontman] and I get along great, [and] my [new] bandmates are great."

Max Cavalera's son Zyon sat behind the drum kit for the band's July 31 performance at the Lokerse festival in Lokeren, Belgium. The concert also marked the debut appearance with SOULFLY of the band's new bassist Tony Campos (STATIC-X, PRONG, ASESINO, MINISTRY, POSSESSED), who replaced Bobby Burns this past spring.

Zyon made many special appearances with Max's other band, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, on CC's recent European tour, performing "Attitude/Cockroaches" at Sonisphere, With Full Force, and Hellfest festivals, to name a few. According to Max's wife/manager (and Zyon's mom) Gloria Cavalera, Zyon learned to drum "sitting at the feet of some of the most gifted metal drummers of all time, including his uncle Igor Cavalera, Bill Ward and Roy Mayorga, to name a few." This was a special guest appearance only, since Zyon's full-time band is MOLD BREAKER, which he formed with his younger brother Igor.

Bassist Johny Chow, who has played with SOULFLY's Max Cavalera and Marc Rizzo (guitar) in CAVALERA CONSPIRACY and is a member of FIREBALL MINISTRY, loaned his skills to SOULFLY for the band's recent touring activities.

"Omen" sold 6,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 73 on The Billboard 200 chart.

The third in a five-part series of webisodes featuring behind-the-scenes footage from the making of the new ICED EARTH album, "Dystopia", can be seen below.

Although "Dystopia", ICED EARTH's 10th studio offering, is not a concept album, founder Jon Schaffer admits there are unifying themes to several of the songs — and even an appearance by band mascot "Set Abominae."

"I've always been fascinated by the darker side of life," Schaffer said during a break from master tracking ICED EARTH's forthcoming CD. "Movies like 'Metropolis', 'Brazil', and 'The Matrix' resonate with me. The same for albums like '2112', 'The Wall', and, of course, 'Operation: Mindcrime'. Their images of a soulless, repressive society stuck with me over the years. It must be the sci-fi fan in me."

In much the same way "Horror Show" (ICED EARTH's tribute to classic characters from literature and movies) was born, Schaffer said his interest in dystopian themes in music and movies led him to try his hand at that genre as well — even paying homage on the new album to the movies "Dark City", "V For Vendetta", and "Soylent Green". The end result is ICED EARTH meets the nightmarish offspring of "Brave New World" and "Blade Runner".

Of special interest to long-time fans are two songs on "Dystopia" (the title track and "Tragedy and Triumph") that feature the return of the "Something Wicked" storyline and Set Abominae — who, when last seen in "The Crucible of Man" (2008), had taken his position as ruler of the world.

"The opening song is a step back timeline-wise from the 'Come What May' track," said Schaffer. "'Come What May' [the last track on 'Crucible'] sets the scenario that it's up to us and the decisions we make that will determine the future of the human race. These two songs [on 'Dystopia'] take place at a time when people are in highly controlled prison-like city states, and their eventual emancipation in the closer, 'Tragedy and Triumph'."

In an uncanny case of art imitating life, Schaffer said Set Abominae fit perfectly with the general theme of "Dystopia".

"I remember it hit me like a ton of bricks in '97, the whole 'Something Wicked' story did," Schaffer said. "I thought, 'Man, this is going to be so cool.' Many years later, we were on tour for 'Crucible' and we were doing an interview over in Eastern Europe. A buddy of mine said, 'You know, Jon, this whole 'Something Wicked' thing could be true.' I thought about it a moment and said, 'Well, I don't know about that. But there are some creepy parallels in contemporary life.'"

"So as I was thinking about all of the great movies, albums, and books with dystopian themes, I remembered that conversation and it occurred to me that the 'Something Wicked' story could continue in a few tracks here very nicely," Schaffer said.

Schaffer admits the recording of "Dystopia" has been especially challenging because of the band's summer festival gigs requiring him to criss-cross the ocean numerous times.

Despite the challenges, Schaffer says working with new vocalist Stu Block is "a pleasure."

"You just can't ask for a better attitude," said Schaffer. "Stu is so excited to be here. He brings a youthful exuberance to the band, which is a lot of fun. And he's a real dude. He's down to earth, and willing to try anything that Jim [Morris, co-producer, engineer] or I throw at him. He's stepping into the shoes in a very natural way."

Schaffer continued: "We're opening up a part of his voice and a style of singing that he didn't even really know he had. We're exploring this whole new range. And we're just getting started. I believe Stu will continue to grow — and has the potential to grow — into one of the greats, one of the guys that will go down in metal history. If he stays on this course, with the attitude that he has, his willingness to learn, and his passion, he's destined for really great things. I firmly believe that."

Songtitles set to appear on "Dystopia":

* Dystopia
* Anthem
* Days of Rage
* Soylent Green
* V
* Boiling Point
* Anguish of Youth
* Iron Will
* Dark City
* End of Innocence
* Equilibrium
* Tragedy and Triumph

"Dystopia" is scheduled for release in Europe on October 17 and in the U.S. on October 18 via Century Media Records. Two bonus tracks are also being recording for inclusion on special editions of the album.

The release of "Dystopia" will be followed by the most extensive world tour ICED EARTH has ever undertaken.

The European leg of the 2011-2012 "World Dystopia Tour" has been posted on the band's official web site, and all official social-media sites. The trek begins October 30 in Bochum, Germany.

"No Halos", the new video from BLACK WATER RISING — the New York-based band featuring former members of BOILER ROOM and DUST TO DUST — can be seen below. The clip, which features Jose Hernandez Jr. (HBO's "Oz") in the starring role, was helmed by acclaimed director Noah Shulman (SOIL, HELLYEAH) and depicts religion as cult and uses media as a brainwashing tool. The viewer follows the preacher as he descends into madness caused by society's ills.

Commented BLACK WATER RISING drummer Mike Meselsohn: "We are so proud and psyched to show our new video to the world. We jumped at the opportunity to work with Noah again and he didn't disappoint. He came up with an awesome concept that really captures the vibe of the song and is visually captivating at the same time."

The self-titled debut from BLACK WATER RISING was released in Europe on April 22 via Metalville Records, the band and label pool launched by the Cologne, Germany-based company Flying Dolphin Entertainment Group UG.

Available in the U.S. on Giddy Up! Records, "Black Water Rising" is described as a collection of soul-baring, angst-ridden, riff-heavy material that is proudly anchored in the foundations of traditional hard rock songwriting. Its giant, guitar-driven monster riffs are served up on a bed of crushing grooves with soaring melodic vocals and big hooks. Lyrically, the message is socially and politically driven by the dark times we live in. With darkness seemingly growing by the day, BLACK WATER RISING is a name that fits this band like a glove.

After releasing two self-produced albums nationwide with a band called DUST TO DUST, singer songwriter Rob Traynor locked himself away for two years in his Brooklyn, New York recording studio, later emerging with a collection of songs that would become the seeds of BLACK WATER RISING.

Reformed British melodic rockers STAMPEDE are giving away a free download of newly recorded studio track, "Shadows Of The Night", via their Facebook page.

STAMPEDE recently spent time in the studio recording a special remake of "Shadows Of The Night", a song which was an old favorite and always a mainstay of the band's live set.

Although originally recorded live, both for a BBC "In Concert" session and at Reading rock festival in 1982 for the live "Official Bootleg" album, up until now STAMPEDE had never recorded a studio version of the song.

"We wanted to do something to say a big thank you to our fans and to all the people that have supported us this year with the release of our new album 'A Sudden Impulse'," states vocalist Reuben Archer. "'Shadows Of The Night' has always been a real favorite of ours so we thought it would be great to do a studio version to give to our fans."

The band is about to kick off a series of live dates with U.S. rockers Y&T in support of STAMPEDE's new album, "A Sudden Impulse", released in May on Rock Candy Records.

One of the most respected hard rock acts during the early Eighties, STAMPEDE signed to Polydor Records and released two albums of impressive melodic rock to both critical and commercial acclaim, being compared to earthy British bands such as UFO and HUMBLE PIE.

Following regenerated interest brought about by Rock Candy Records' reissue of "Hurricane Town" in 2006, the songwriting partnership of Lead singer Reuben Archer and Laurence Archer decided to reform the band in 2009. Together with original bassist Colin Bond, new drummer Steve Graystone and the addition of a second guitarist in the form of Chris Clowsley, the band has crafted a worthy, if not superlative, long lost follow-up to their studio debut in the opinion of label manager Derek Oliver, who describes the new material as "lean, mean, tough-guy hard rock with all the soulful delivery of classic British steel led by Reuben's instantly identifiable vocal and Laurence's blistering plank spanking burnouts."

Norwegian "blackjazz" outfit SHINING (not to be confused with the Swedish extreme metal band of the same name) will release its first-ever live DVD and CD, "Live Blackjazz", on November 11 via Indie Recordings. The effort was produced by SHINING frontman Jørgen Munkeby and was mixed by Sean Beavan (MARILYN MANSON, NINE INCH NAILS, SLAYER). The mastering duties were handled by Tom Baker (MARILYN MANSON, NINE INCH NAILS)

For the first time ever, the raw energy of SHINING's legendary live performances has been captured on tape in a setting organized solely by the band itself. Produced by Munkeby and backed by the same mixing and mastering team as on their previous "Blackjazz" studio album, we could not get a truer version of what "Blackjazz" is meant to be. Straight from the horse's mouth, this is the new standard that bands will strive to match for the next 10 or 20 years to come.

"This is basically the 'Greatest Hits' album we have always dreamed of, now beautifully combined with breath-taking film footage vibrating with power. It feels good to know that people can now truly experience how much fire and effort we pour into our live shows. It could not have been better!" stated Jørgen Munkeby.

Over the course of its impressive 10-plus-year career, SHINING has created its own unique and bizarre hybrid of jazz and extreme metal, which is easily distinguishable from the musical world of their Swedish counterparts sharing the same band name.

The first in a three-part series of video clips in which vocalist/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt of Swedish progressive metallers OPETH breaks down the band's new album, "Heritage", can be seen below.

Says Åkerfeldt: "It feels like I've been building up to write and participate on an album like this since I was 19.

"I think you'll need a slightly deeper understanding of our music as a whole to be able to appreciate this record. I've realized my influences for this album are so diverse that I can't really say what it sounds like.

"If I can compare it to any other band, it would have to be OPETH, but it's different from the stuff we've done before. I've listened a lot to ALICE COOPER for the last year, yet I can't say it sounds like 'No More Mr Nice Guy'. I hope you'll like it once you hear it."

OPETH's new album, "Heritage", sold 19,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 19 on The Billboard 200 chart.

OPETH's previous studio CD, 2008's "Watershed", opened with more than 19,000 units to land at No. 23.

"Watershed" was the follow-up to the band's acclaimed "Ghost Reveries" CD, which debuted at No. 64 on the Billboard chart back in September 2005 with first-week sales of just under 15,000.

OPETH's 2003 album, "Damnation", premiered with a little over 5,000 copies.

"Heritage" was produced by OPETH vocalist/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt and was recorded earlier this year at Atlantis studios (formerly Metronome studios) in Stockholm. Mixing duties were handled by Steven Wilson (PORCUPINE TREE) and Åkerfeldt. Longtime collaborator Travis Smith also worked with Åkerfeldt to create, design and execute the album's artwork, which can be seen below.

"Heritage" first-week chart positions so far:

Denmark: 8
Norway: 8
Germany: 9
Netherlands: 10
Australia: 12
Austria: 16
U.S.A.: 19
U.K.: 22
France: 24
New Zealand: 26
Ireland: 34
Belgium: 87

Ohio-based metalcore quintet LIKE MOTHS TO FLAMES has inked a European deal with Nuclear Blast Records. The band's full-length debut, "When We Don't Exist", is scheduled for a November 11 release.

Commented LIKE MOTHS TO FLAMES singer/mainman Chris Roetter: "We are very excited to have our debut album, 'When We Don't Exist', released by Nuclear Blast in Europe. Their history of signing incredibly heavy bands combined with some of their more recent signings excites us greatly. We cannot wait to come over to Europe in support of the album, and are thankful to have a label there who will ensure our music is heard!"

Added the label in a statement: "We're proud to work with LIKE MOTHS TO FLAMES from now on. Their EP already blew us away, but their debut album simply kicks even more ass. A lot more varied, a lot more matured and a real inferno of modern metalcore. Even if there's a lot of melody to LIKE MOTHS TO FLAMES' sound, the band definitely focusses on heavy riffing and brutal breakdowns. Watch out!"

A new LIKE MOTHS TO FLAMES song, "You Won't Be Missed" — taken from the forthcoming CD — can be heard in the YouTube clip below.

LIKE MOTHS TO FLAMES is:

Chris Roetter - Vocals
Aaron Evans - Bass
Zach Huston - Guitar
Eli Ford - Guiar
Lance Greenfield - Drums

Polish avantgarde metallers STROMMOUSSHELD have just finished the pre-production process for their long-awaited second full-length album, entitled "No Direction Home".

Commented the group: "We confirm the rumours about coming back to life as a real band. We ended up putting together all the riffs and soundscapes we managed to gather during all those fuckin' years. Now, when we have the vision of this yet unborn bastard we may say the new album is going to be something you would never expect from us!"

STROMMOUSSHELD is preparing to enter the studio to begin recording the new CD. The drum tracks will be laid down at the Huge Studio while the rest of the instruments and vocals will be tracked at SH Studio. The production will be handled by Maels Strommo, band's vocalist and guitarist.

STROMMOUSSHELD's full-length debut was released in 2003 by Avantgarde Music.

Legendary rocker Alice Cooper was interviewed by Eddie McGuire for the "The Hot Breakfast" show, which airs on Australia's Triple M radio station. You can now watch the 13-minute chat below.

Alice Cooper's new album, "Welcome 2 My Nightmare", sold 18,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 22 on The Billboard 200 chart. Cooper's previous CD, 2008's "Along Came A Spider", opened with just under 10,000 copies to land at No. 53.

Recorded with longtime collaborator Bob Ezrin, who produced the original multi-platinum "Welcome To My Nightmare" album in 1975, "Welcome 2 My Nightmare" picks up right where they left off, with Alice trapped in his own warped mind.

That original album is an all-time rock classic that spawned a worldwide theatrical tour and pioneering U.S. TV special and cemented Alice Cooper as a visionary trailblazer whose influence persists today in rock, metal, pop, punk, theater, television, film and much more.

Although the band continues to stay true to its characteristic style, they do not shy away from including new elements and details to refresh their sound. The guitars and Manda Ophuis' outstanding vocals continue to be the driving force behind NEMESEA. Manda perfectly understands which web of emotion to weave for each particular track and how to make use of her fantastic vocal lines to breathe life into the lyrics. With extremely appealing songs like 'Afterlife', 'Caught In The Middle', or the beautiful ballad 'If You Could', the alternative rock quintet have several surefire hits from the get-go. NEMESEA's 'The Quiet Resistance' offers intense and soulful alternative rock complete with a subtle breath of gothic and loudly demands the attention the band undoubtedly deserves."

NEMESEA recently parted ways with drummer Steven Bouma and replaced him with Frank Van Der Star.

NEMESEA recorded its July 2 and July 3, 2009 concerts at P3 in Purmerend, Holland for a live album, "Pure: Live @ P3", which was released in September 2009. The shows were unique in the sense that the audience was able to hear the band perform live in Surround Sound 7.0 as part of an innovative project that was conducted in co-operation with students from the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU).

NEMESEA's second album, "In Control", was produced by Tony Platt (AC/DC, BOB MARLEY) and Ronald Prent (RAMMSTEIN) and was released in June 2007.
