Bicyclist's death raises concerns over safety on roads on day true story

The weekend death of an Aiken bicyclist surfaces concerns relayed by state troopers about pedestrian, bicyclist and motorcyclist deaths occurring across the state.
& Through Dec. 31, 2011, 111 pedestrians, 102 motorcyclists and 13 bicyclists died on state roads and highways.
& In 2010, 90 pedestrians, 82 motorcyclists and 14 bicyclists died on S.C. roads.
& The Sunday death of 68-year-old Gerald Hooker occurred around 3 p.m. when he and his wife, Opal Hooker, were reportedly struck on Banks Mill Road by a vehicle while the two were attempting to make a left turn onto Lone Oak Drive, said Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.
& Opal Hooker was treated at a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
& The vehicle, a 2009 Ford driven by Whitney Duncan, 23, of Aiken, was attempting to pass them, Carlton reported.
& The Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is investigating the crash.
& Hooker's death is the first traffic-related fatality reported in Aiken County this year.
& The details of the crash and the specifics have not been released at this time.
& Lance Cpl. Judd Jones with the S.C. Highway Patrol said that, to his knowledge, no charges have been filed thus far.
& The case, he said, is still active.
& More details will be released about the investigation as they are made public.

& * Be alert to moving traffic at intersections.&
