Rashad Evans Dominates Phil Davis for Five Rounds: Immediate UFC on Fox 2 Fan Reaction - UFC on day true story
The main event of UFC on Fox 2 pitted the former UFC light heavyweight champion, Rashad Evans, squaring off with the best prospect in the division, the undefeated Phil Davis. A win from Evans would ensure that he would finally get his fight with former teammate, Jon Jones, while a win from Davis wouldn't guarantee a title shot, an impressive victory would set him down the right path.
The pressure was on Evans coming into this fight. He has been set to fight Jones twice, but injuries have derailed those opportunities. While most fans predicted an Evans victory, a loss to Davis was a serious possibility, despite Davis coming off a long layoff due to injury. This fight was also going to test the chin of Davis, as those powerful Evans punches that have knocked out some of the best fighters in the sport previously.
In the early going, Davis used his powerful leg kicks to keep Evans from getting close. Evans has impressive knockout power and the best defense for Davis to prevent getting rocked was using those kicks.
Davis seemed more willing to attack, but Evans showed tremendous counter-strikes. With 90 seconds left in the first round, Evans caught a kick and tripped Davis, putting the grappler in an unfamiliar place. Evans then caught Davis in the mounted crucifix and landed countless shots on his defenseless opponent, sealing the first round in his favor.
My scorecard: first round to Evans, 10-9.
The second round was close from the beginning. Davis was more willing to throw kicks and punches, while Evans continued to be patient and wait for his time to pounce. With 30 seconds, that time came when he caught another kick and dropped Davis to the mat, clinching another round in his favor.
My scorecard: second round to Evans, 10-9.
The third round showed how much more evolved Evans is in the sport than Davis. Davis has great collegiate wrestling skills, but had no answer for the former champion. With a minute left, Davis landed a double-leg takedown on Evans, but was unable to keep him down for long.
My scorecard: third round to Evans, 10-9.
For the first time in their careers, Evans and Davis reached the "championship" rounds. Both men began the round looking exhausted and the pace in the fourth round would attest to that. It was a slow, dragged out round that could go either way in the eyes of the judges.
My scorecard: fourth round to Evans, 10-9.
In the final round, it was another blocked kick by Evans that led to an advantageous position for the former champion. Evans worked his way back to the mounted crucifix, but Davis was able to maneuver his way back to the feet, giving him two minutes to knock out Evans, or go home with a loss. Davis was unable to get close enough in the final two minutes to get the knockout, showing that he has a lot of work left to do before he gets a world title shot.
My scorecard: fifth round to Evans, 10-9, and 50-45 overall.
Official decision: Rashad Evans via unanimous decision
