Description: | The name of this service comes from the Latin word for "shadow." Tenebrae is comprised of a series of readings, canticles, and psalms. Over the course of the readings candles are gradually extinguished until only one candle (signifying Jesus Christ) remains. That candle is then hidden, symbolizing the apparent victory of death. A loud noise is then made (to replicate the earthquake at the time of the crucifixion) and then the hidden candle returns. All depart in silence by the light of that candle. |
