For Sale: Big-League Homes - NYTimes.com on day true story
Ah, the life of a big-league ballplayer. Get that one big contract and you're set for life. No more worries. Well, when you move around the country, changing employers as major leaguers often do, you wind up collecting homes. And getting out from under some of those mortgages isn't always easy, especially in today's real estate market. We're not experts, but we're thinking the demand for mansions may be a little slow these days.
The Web site toptenrealestatedeals.com keeps track of some of the more interesting offerings on the market, and to mark opening day this week, it listed the top 10 homes for sale by current or former major league players.
Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira hit the list at No. 10. According to the site, his estate has been for sale since he left Texas in 2007. The 8,554-square-foot lakefront home is in the Vaquero Golf Club in Westlake, Tex., and features five bedrooms and eight bathrooms. Asking price: $3.995 million.
Hall of Famers or future Hall of Famers are not immune to the market. Barry Larkin's Orlando, Fla., home — 14,477 square feet on Lake Chase — has a lighted tennis court, a basketball court and a four-boat dock. You can watch the fireworks over Disney each night from your outdoor kitchen and theater, then dance the night away in the disco lounge. Price: $10.9 million.
John Smoltz would like to move his 22-acre estate, including his 18,265-square-foot house in Milton, Ga. Asking price: $7.2 million. Smoltz's home is not built in a golf course community, but it does have its own 18-hole layout, a baseball diamond and an eight-car garage.
Jonathan Papelbon was more of a city guy during his seven seasons with the Red Sox, but he moved down the corridor to Philadelphia, and his 2,500-square-foot penthouse apartment on Beacon Street is for sale for $3.1 million. For that price, you get roof access and two decks that sport a hot tub and a view of the Charles River Basin.
And at No. 3 is Adrian Beltre's home in Bradbury, Calif., 30 minutes outside of Los Angeles. Beyond the entry with a 35-foot ceiling are 7 bedrooms and 16 bathrooms. No waiting. There's a guest house included for the $19.8 million asking price.
If those are all out of your price range, you might want to look at No. 8 on the list. Nomar Garciaparra's childhood home, a three-bedroom, two-bath Spanish-style home in Whittier, Calif., can be yours for $595,000.
