PAC-12 Football 2012 Spring Game Schedule on day true story
The 2011 college football season ended with four PAC-12 teams ranked in the top 10 nationally. USC and Oregon look to be contenders again in 2012, while there are a few more questions to be answered at Stanford.
Fans of PAC-12 football will get their first look at the new teams in April, when all 12 teams play their spring games.
Here is the complete schedule:
Arizona Wildcats, Spring Game
April 14, 1 p.m, Kino Stadium, Tucson, AZ
As Rich Rodriguez takes over as head coach, he will be evaluating the current players to see who best fits into the new offensive and defensive schemes he wants to install. Until he has a chance to recruit players who fit his system, he'll have to make do with those who are already there.
Colorado Buffaloes, Spring Game
April 14, 5 p.m., Folsom Field, Boulder, CO
The Buffaloes have only four returning starters on offense. This spring will be a time of teaching, more than refining. In the 2011 season, Colorado's first in the PAC-12, it finished last or nearly last in most conference statistics. A fresh start in Boulder is a good thing.
USC Trojans, Spring Game
April 14, 1:30 p.m., Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, CA
On paper, the Trojans look ready to compete for a national championship, returning Matt Barkley at quarterback, Robert Woods and Marqise Lee at wide receiver, and the entire starting defensive backfield from 2011. The challenge will be to keep the players focused, ignoring the hype in Los Angeles.
Stanford Cardinal, Cardinal and White Spring Game
April 14, 2 p.m., Kezar Stadium, San Francisco, CA
With Andrew Luck gone to the NFL, the Cardinal quarterback competition will be the most watched in the nation. Brett Nottingham, Robbie Picazo, Josh Nunes, Kevin Hogan, Evan Crower? Stanford also needs to replace two All-American offensive linemen, with new freshman recruits battling for the jobs.
Arizona State Sun Devils, Spring Game
April 21, 1 p.m., Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe, AZ
Todd Graham is the Sun Devils' new head coach. The competition at quarterback will be a key to watch, with Mike Bercovici, Taylor Kelly, and Michael Eubank battling to replace Brock Osweiler. Perhaps a bigger question is who will catch the passes, as three of their four top wide receivers from 2011 are gone.
California Golden Bears, Cal Spring Football
April 21, 10 a.m., Edwards Stadium, Berkeley, CA
The good news for the Bears is that QB Zach Maynard, RB Isi Sofele, and WR Keenan Allen all return. The defensive side will be a struggle to see who the new stars are going to be. Leading candidates to keep an eye on include Deandre Coleman, Mustafa Jalil, Michael Coley, and Avery Sebastian.
Utah Utes, Red-White Spring Game
April 21, 1 p.m., Rice-Eccles Stadium, Salt Lake City, UT
The Utes are looking for new offensive linemen to protect their returning stars, quarterback Jordan Wynn and running back John White IV. The defensive side, led by Star Lotulelei, should again be among the best in the conference. Look for Utah to challenge the best teams in 2012.
Washington State Cougars, Crimson and Gray Spring Game
April 24, 1 p.m., Joe Albi Stadium, Spokane, WA
Priority 1 in Pullman will be getting to know each other. The new head coach, Mike Leach, has hired an entirely new staff as well. Players and coaches alike will need some time to evaluate where they are and how to move forward. Jeff Tuel is a good bet to be the starting quarterback, but after that it's anybody's guess.
Oregon Ducks, Spring Game
April 28, 11 a.m., Autzen Stadium, Eugene, OR
The 2012 Rose Bowl champion Ducks have shown depth in recent years. It doesn't look like a question of whether they can find good starters, but rather who will win the jobs. Bryan Bennet or Marcus Mariota at quarterback? Devon Blackmon, B.J. Kelley and/or Tacoi Sumler at wide receiver? Redshirt freshmen Koa Ka'ai and Sam Kamp on defense? On the field, the Ducks look to be a strong contender again.
Oregon State Beavers, Spring Game
April 28, TBA, Reser Stadium, Corvallis, OR
The Beavers return most of their starting offensive line, defensive ends, and leading running back from 2011. The bad news is they weren't very good last season. Isaac Seumalo, a truly elite incoming freshman, may be called upon immediately on either the offensive or defensive line (or both?).Washington Huskies, Spring Game
April 28, 11 a.m., CenturyLink Field, Seattle, WA
New defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox will take over a defense that was awful in 2011. While he tries to install a new tough-guy attitude, the offense needs to replace its leading rusher and top two receivers. All in all, it looks like another long and tough season for the Huskies.
UCLA Bruins, Spring Game
May 5, 5 p.m., Rose Bowl Stadium, Los Angeles, CA
Jim Mora is the new head coach at UCLA. Item 1 on his list of things to do may be finding a starting quarterback, with Brett Hundley, Kevin Prince, and Richard Brehautas competing for the job. Recent Bruin teams have had a reputation for softness, especially on defense. Mora hopes to bring a new attitude to the program.
An avid fan of Oregon Football for nearly 50 years, from the PAC-8 to the PAC-12, Harold Andrews is looking forward to watching the Ducks again in 2012.
