Gelalich powers UCLA past Creighton 13-5 on day true story
LOS ANGELES — Jeff Gelalich homered twice and had four RBIs to lead UCLA to a 13-5 victory over Creighton in the championship game of the Los Angeles Regional on Sunday night.
The Bruins [team stats] (45-14) advanced to the best-of-three super regionals beginning next Friday. UCLA will play the winner of the TCU/Ole Miss series.
"It's a great feeling," Gelalich said. "I wasn't thinking or focusing on it during the game, but I hope we can carry this momentum into next weekend."
Gelalich hit his 10th home run of the season — a two-run shot — deep over the right-field fence to tie the score at 2 in the first and then drilled a solo shot in the fifth.
He was on base all five times he batted finishing with three hits, two walks and three runs scored to earn Most Outstanding Player for the tournament.
"The momentum of the game shifted a little after Gelalich's home run in the first inning," said Creighton left fielder Anthony Bemboom, who went 5 for 5. "When you get guys in scoring positions you have to take advantage of that and we didn't do that tonight."
Bruins coach John Savage said Gelalich has been clutch all season.
"He's had a MVP year," Savage said. "He's been the leader in the middle of our lineup all season."
The Bruins had 35 hits and scored 23 runs in two wins against Creighton and a win against New Mexico in the tournament. Their pitching, led by Adam Plutko's two-hitter on Friday and Nick Vander Tuig's one-hitter over eight innings on Saturday, also played a big role.
"You want to be playing your best baseball at this time of the season," UCLA second baseman Trevor Brown said. "I think this weekend we pitched well and swung the bats. We want to carry this over."
Brown's two-run single and Pat Valaika's suicide-squeeze bunt highlighted a five-run third inning that propelled UCLA to a 7-2 lead.
Zack Weiss (3-2) pitched five innings and earned the win. Nick Musec (3-4) took the loss, and Anthony Bemboom had five hits for the Bluejays (28-30).
