Greene names its Senior of Year
GREENE COUNTY, N.Y. — David Battini of Greenville was honored as Greene County's Senior Citizen of the Year at a May 16 meeting of the county Legislature.
Liz Jarvis of Athens received the Outstanding contribution by a Senior Citizen Award at the same meeting.
While employed as a teacher in the Cairo-Durham School District from 1968 to 1998, Battini served the Boy Scouts as an assistant scout master before moving up to scout master in 1979, a title he still holds. He was chosen New York State Scouter of the Year by the American Legion.
Battini has been a member of the Greenville Volunteer Fire Company since 1970 and also serves with the Fire Police. He was the founder and initial first aid trainer for the Greenville Rescue Squad in 1972. Since 2007, he has been the No. 1 responder to ambulance calls as an advanced intermediate emergency medical technician. He has conducted many classes in cardio pulmonary resuscitation for the American Heart Association.
Battini serves as a member of the Greene County Rural Health Network, the Greene County Emergency Medical Service Council and the REMO Executive Board. He is also treasurer for the Greene County Paramedic Program and chairman of the Board of Assessment Review. In addition, he serves as a driver for Greene County Department for the Aging's Homebound Delivered Meals.
Jarvis retired and moved to Greene County in 2008. Since her arrival, she has been involved with the Greene County Department for the Aging's volunteer program. She has been a volunteer at the Rivertown Thrift Shop. She also volunteers her time to the Athens Crafters group, which makes and donates items for Greene County Domestic Violence and other community organizations. In addition, she sits on the RSVP Advisory Council, serving on the Fundraising Committee and the Recognition Day Committee.
Along with these honors the county legislature presented Certificates of Merit to eight other residents for their contributions as volunteers. They were Jeanne Cary, Marie Kadlick and Joe Mayo, all of Coxsackie; James Eisert of Palenville, Frank Mucich of Catskill, Andy Giardino and Karen Thiessen, both of Windham; and Angela DelNero of Lexington.
The Department of the Aging recognized all award nominees at the Second Annual senior Citizen Day at the Historic Point in Catskill.
