Karate Kid To Get New Legs - News Story on day true story

The simple act of walking, jumping or going up and down stairs is something many take for granted. For one local 8-year-old it's more difficult than you can imagine, but that's about to change.Mikey Lucas is just like every other kid in his Karate class. He punches, he yells, he even kicks. The only difference is he doesn't have any legs.Warhorse Martial Arts instructor Kevin Piper says, "If you looked at his face you would never know he has so many difficulties doing everything that people take for granted."Mikey lived in China until he was five, that's when Mark and Janell Lucas decided to adopt him. "His special need is that he didn't have a tibia in either leg," Mark said.Mikey used to walk on his knees with the rest of his legs tucked underneath him. "I guess we figured they were just legs and not that big of a deal. The kid had a fire in his spirit and that's what we were attracted to," Mark said. Shortly after his adoption Mikey's legs were removed surgically at the knee, that's when he was fitted for his first prosthetic. Holding up one of his metal and fiber legs Mikey said, "I have snake skin now but I'm going to get fire on these."Having three sisters Mikey had to learn to keep up and fast. So he followed their lead and started taking Karate lessons at Warhorse Martial Arts in Spokane Valley. "He had some balance issues and all the different things and we just had to be very patient with him but now it's trying to keep up with him is more like it," Piper said.Holding up a roll of old Karate belts Mikey pointed to the first one, rolled into the center of the bundle. "I earned these. This is my white belt," Mikey said. But it hasn't been all fun and games. "When I go to the stores and stuff they always point at me and 'look this is robot leg," Mikey said. His dad knows it can be hard for an 8-year-old to deal with. "I know on the inside it stings a little bit for him. From what I see he handles it really well," Mark said. While Mikey's spirit tells him he can do anything, his parent knew he may never be able to run at a full sprint. They couldn't afford the specialized prosthetics. That is until they met Dr. Kevin Carroll. He's the same doctor who put a prosthetic limb on a dolphin. You may have seen the previews in theaters called "Dolphin Tail."Mikey's mom Janell said, "He says, 'Mikey, you need running legs.' So here we are." Carroll will provide the running prosthetic for free. Something Mikey is quite excited about. "There's a hook on it and you put it on your foot and you run as fast as you can and I'm going to like it," Mikey said with a small grin. But there are other costs associated with the fitting. "You know we are just along for the ride and we're just trying to keep up and keep as many doors open as we can to give all our children the best opportunities that there is to have for them," Mark said. The Lucas family will have to come up with around $10,000 for Mikey's running legs. They also have to buy their own plane tickets to San Diego to pick them up.There's a fundraiser Saturday afternoon at the Hub Sports Center starting at 2:30. Members of the Warhorse Martial Arts studios are collecting pledges -- and will try to get in a thousand kicks in an hour. You can also donate to any Washington Trust bank under the account 'Run Mikey Run.' Or drop off your donation at any Warhorse Martial Arts Center.
