OFFICER SHOOTING: Forest City police officer shot by DCI is now charged with arson and burglary - Local News - Des Moines, IA on day true story

& A northern Iowa police officer under investigation is shot by DCI agents during a struggle. It started as an arson and burglary investigation in Forest City. Yesterday, it ended in an officer involved shooting.&

Special Agents Chris Callaway and Steve Peterson came face to face with armed off duty officer Thaddeus Ellenbecker. The 34 year old is suspected of setting fire to the Forest City Police station on October 1st. The damage was so extensive, the department had to move from the building.

The agents had just interviewed Ellenbecker. They went to check on him, but say some kind of struggle broke otu and Ellenbecker was shot.

"It was crazy. They both go outside and see the officer that shot the gun pacing back and forth apparently holding a steel plated gun," says neighbor Kelsae Sage.

Ellenbecker was rushed to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The DCI says he remains hospitalized tonight. Today, he was charged with Second Degree Arson and Second Degree Burglary. Both are felonies. The burglary charge stems from an accusation that Ellenbecker stole a rifle from a fellow officer.

"I'm from small towns around here and having something like happen, it's unusual," says Sage.

Ellenbecker will be booked into the Winnebago County Jail as soon as he is released from the hospital. There is no time frame for when that will happen.

Agents Callaway and Peterson on paid administrative leave tonight. That is standard procedure for law enforcement involved in any kind of shooting.
