DART and LAURELS: Curious George recovering well thanks to Delaware County SPCA on day true story
A look at the week that was, the issues and people who made headlines, and a few darts and laurels for those who deserve them.
LAUREL: To Curious George. What a charmer. The most famous pit bull puppy in Delco is now well on the way to a full recovery after being scooped up off the streets in an abominable, emaciated condition. Here's to a full recovery.
DART: To the persons responsible for what authorities believe was a deliberate case of abuse, in effect starving George. How can anyone be so callous.
LAUREL: To the SPCA. They have performed something of a miracle with George. While he has gotten a lot of fanfare, the truth is this is an issue they deal with every day.
DART: To the very serious problem of stray animals in the county. We're likely to find out just how serious on Jan. 1, when the SPCA gets out of the animal-control business. The county's plan to build a new shelter will not be ready and towns will be scrambling for alternatives.
LAUREL: To the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Their $1 million grant to Philabundance will go a long way toward the not-for-profit establishing a supermarket in the city.
DART: That's good news. Not so good is the fact that clearly there is no commercial supermarket willing to set up shop in the city.
LAUREL: To Boeing. One of the few remaining icons of Delco industry has submitted a proposal to build 155 more Chinook helicopters at its Ridley plant. That would go a long way toward securing hundreds of jobs in Delco.
DART: The same can't be said for two other Delco barons, the folks at Sunoco and ConocoPhillips. Both have indicated they will attempt to sell their refineries in the lower end, and if not successful they will close the doors.
LAUREL: To U.S. Rep. Pat Meehan and other members of the regional congressional delegation. They are seeking a study of the economic and energy impact of the potential closing of the two refineries here in Delco as well as one in South Philly. Here's a hint: It won't be good. Continued...
DART: To the angst that grows each day among families who depend on those refineries for their way of life. It's a bit like living under Damocles' sword. Here's hoping a buyer can be found.
DART: To sex tapes. They're not usually a good idea. And remember, once that tape is made, you never know where it's going to end up. You could be starring on the Internet and not even be aware of it.
LAUREL: To the county detectives who troll the Internet looking for predators and other sex offenders. The sad part is that they're likely only making a small dent in a huge problem.
LAUREL: To Cabrini College. They're cutting tuition by 12.5 percent for the fall 2012 semester. You heard it right. A college where costs are going down. And the cuts will remain in effect until 2015. Bravo!
DART: To the outrageous cost of college. And to the fact that so many kids and families believe they must attend a "name" facility, as opposed to a local school or community college that won't break the bank.
LAUREL: To Upper Chichester. Speaking of cutting things, the township is planning to cut taxes again this year. That's always a welcome development.
DART: It's also pretty rare. Most towns, and even the county, are looking at decreasing revenue. That translates into tax hikes.
LAUREL: To the Penn State community. This has not been an easy week. Each day seems to bring new revelations, and none of them good. After a brief outbreak of violence following the firing of legendary coach Joe Paterno, the conduct of students has been for the most part exemplary.
DART: To those who knew what was going on, apparently for years, and failed to take the proper action. Shame.
DART: To the long-delayed plans to fix the Killer Conchester. If it seems like they've been talking about the Route 322 project forever, it's because they have. Neighbors now try to avoid the road altogether. They know something we all should heed — it's dangerous out there. Continued...
LAUREL: To the neighbors who have to deal with the constant sounds of screeching tires and crunching metal, a sure sign of another accident on the Conchester. And to word that repairs are on the way.
DART: To Leron Magilner. The Haverford man was in court and pleaded guilty this week to scamming his friends and co-workers out of some big bucks under the ruse that he was suffering from cancer. He wasn't. How low can you go?
LAUREL: To the kids at Russell Elementary School in Marple. They raised $2,500 in the battle against cancer. That's the way it should be done.
DART: To hit-and-runs. We've had two more incidents in the news this week. In one an assistant district attorney faces charges. Anyone can make a mistake and have an accident. Leaving the scene is another matter.
LAUREL: To the witnesses and those with information who came forward in the case. Their actions led to the break in the case.
DART: To the Eagles. Everyone who believes this team can go on a roll and make the playoffs, raise your hand. Thought so.
LAUREL: To fans who continue to pack Lincoln Financial Field. Those seats aren't cheap. Last Sunday, the place was like a tomb as the Eagles put on a thoroughly dispiriting display.
DART: To DeSean Jackson. Yes, he is being woefully underpaid. But missing a meeting is still not acceptable. Hard to quibble with Andy Reid for benching his star for the game.
LAUREL: To LeSean McCoy. Hey, Andy, remember him? He's one of the elite running backs in the league. Why not try putting the game in his hands, especially when your QB is hurt, your best wide receiver is sitting at home, and your next-best wideout is banged up early in the game.
