Lacuna's Olympic dream put on hold on day true story
MALOLOS CITY, Philippines – Bulacan pride Jessie King Lacuna's dream of making it to the London Games takes a backseat at the moment as he is now focused on the competitions in the forthcoming South East Asian (SEA) Games in Indonesia.
"I'm always thinking about Olympics but for now I'm focusing in SEA Games here in Palembang," said Lacuna in an email sent to The STAR on Wednesday night.
At present, he said that all he wanted is to win a medal in the individual events of the SEAG swimming.
The 17-year-old Lacuna will compete in the 200 and 400 meters freestyle, and 200 meters butterfly events.
There are also possibilities that he might compete in the relay events.
While he is focused on the SEA Games, Lacuna said that he is hoping to breach the 1:48 minutes qualifying time in the 200 meters freestyle to secure a slot in the London Olympics next year.
Lacuna's best time in the event is 1:50 which he made during the Singapore National Games in March last year, breaking the Philipine record.
Lacuna later competed in the World Championship held in Shanghai, China but didn't break his personal record.
As the SEA Games competition nears, he said that he is excited and hopes to break his record, and secure him a slot to the London Olympics.
"I feel that the SEA Games will be fun, exciting, and awesome," he said.
With regards to his competitors, Lacuna said that he feels that everyone is ready and has trained hard.
"We all trained hard for it, it will be a tough race for everyone. I think I am ready as well," he said noting that for months he has joined a training camp in Florida.
