Belmont Stakes 2012 Odds and the Names You Need to Know: Fan's Take on day true story

The anticlimactic Belmont Stakes will take place today without I'll Have Another. Here are the odds and the names that you need to know for the remaining contenders.

The odds were current as of the time of this column's publication. The most up-to-date information can be accessed directly through the Belmont Stakes site.

2. Unstoppable U (20-1) Ken McPeek - Junior Alvarado

3. Union Rags (3-1) Michael Matz - John Velazquez

4. Atigun (15-1) Ken McPeek - Julien Leparoux

10. Optimizer (15-1) D. Wayne Lukas - Corey Nakatani

11. I'll Have Another - Scratched

12. My Adonis (15-1) Kelly Breen - Ramon Dominguez

Anticlimactic event

Not being able to see I'll Have Another try to make a run at history is very disappointing. Everyone who isn't jaded had embraced this horse and his jockey Mario Gutierrez.

As far as any outstanding issues surrounding trainer Doug O'Neill, only he truly knows if any wrongs were committed in the past. I'll wait for others to determine his fate before I draw any deeper conclusions in his regard. In the meantime, a race still needs to be run.

Of course Union Rags, Dullahan, Paynter and Street Life look like nice picks now.

How about long-shot Guyana Star Dweej? Maybe Doodnauth Shivmangal's choice of Kent Desormeaux will lead to a surprising secondary storyline on this June day in New York.

With whatever transpires, many of us were hoping to see if that 1978 torch would finally be passed from Steve Cauthen and Affirmed to new favored sons. While that can't happen, I still hope that a good race is run.

My best goes out to all racing fans around the world.
