BCS countdown: Ranking games from worst to first on day true story
The Times-Picayune is ranking the 57 BCS bowl games played over the past 13 seasons from worst to first. The BCS championship game will be played in New Orleans on Jan. 9, 2012.
No. 17: 2004 Rose Bowl - Southern California 28, Michigan 14
The debate goes on over whether the Trojans deserved to be playing for the BCS version of the national championship. But while LSU was beating Oklahoma to claim the "official" title, USC was getting a stellar performance by Matt Leinart that earned the Trojans a No. 1 ranking from the Associated Press.
Leinart was 23-of-34 for 331 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to Keary Colbert. The Trojans' defense was just as impressive, sacking Michigan quarterback John Navarre nine times.
Colbert's one-handed grab for a 47-yard TD gave USC a 21-0 in the third quarter. Michigan got on the board with a 6-yard TD pass to Tim Massaquoi.
