Mike Rowe Visits The 'Doomsday Vault' (VIDEO) on day true story

Mike Rowe's trudged through all sorts of muck and grossness in his run as the host of "Dirty Jobs" (Tue., 9PM EST on DSC). His latest adventure, which took him to the Chicago Botanic Garden, otherwise known as the "Doomsday Vault," was less gross than it was fascinating. The goal of the seed vault project is to collect a wide variety of plant seeds so that in the event of a global calamity, earth's plant-life would be able to be regenerated. It's like a high-tech Noah's Ark for plant-life.

Rowe's visit was a two-step process. First he went out into a swamp with marine biologist to collect plants and seeds. That element of the adventure satisfied the "dirty" component of the excursion, and the next phase was cataloging and depositing the seeds into the Doomsday Vault itself, an underground storage facility that is kept at a temperature of twenty degrees below zero.

Ever the prankster, Rowe joked with his tour guide, Dr. Pati Vit, that they might need to cuddle with each other for body-warmth. As they left, he pretended to lock his camera crew inside the frigid vault. Thankfully Rowe was just passing through; the planet's vegetation is safe for the time being.
