Brush's varsity boys lit up Yuma for 11 three-pointers while knocking off the 2A No. 8 Indians, 62-51, at BHS Saturday evening.
Santa would be actually proud of how senior Colby Needens showed "no conscience" , because he was really good with a five-for-five first-half effort from long distance. The Beetdiggers (3-2 overall) took a 37-25 halftime lead and never allowed those visiting Indians to make any serious comebacks.
Yuma (4-2) was finishing a busy three games-in-three-nights stretch which began by losing 40-35 to Chase County, Neb., Thursday night. The Indians routed Wray 56-40 on Friday but struggled against old rival Brush. Matt Bowlen (13 points) paced his team despite hitting only five of 21 field goals.
Meanwhile, the 'Diggers shot exactly 50% (11 for 22) from three-point range. Senior Gregory Mares and sophomore Bryce Needens both buried a pair of long bombs. Austin Garcia's late triple put a final exclamation point on this impressive home win.
Brush also defeated Holyoke Friday evening, meaning coach Ken Garcia's team has won three consecutive games since an 0-2 start.
Besides scoring points, Mares dished out six assists and Colby Needens made a team-high threesteals. Junior Mitch Tormohlen and Bryce Needens each pulled down five rebounds. Other Beetdigger leaders were Geoffrey Dunker (three assists), Vince Albo (three rebounds), Kyle Rosenbrock (three rebounds) and Randy Baker (three boards). Tormohlen blocked a Yuma shot.
Mares and Bryce Needens both swiped two more of Brush's 10 steals.
