It's Jim Harper's last day on Detroit's airwaves on day true story

Today is veteran radio host Jim Harper's last morning on the airwaves in the Motor City.

Harper has hosted the morning show at adult contemporary station Magic 105.1 FM WMGC (it's the Christmas station right about now) since 2001 -- he also plays double duty as operations manager. WMGC hasn't announced a replacement for Harper, leading some journalists to suspect a format change will ring in the New Year for 105.1 FM.

Dec. 23, Freep: Harper and his Greater Media Detroit team -- including WRIF-FM (101.1) and WCSX-FM (94.7) -- have been keeping quiet about what the future holds. Radio insiders have speculated that a format change for the station could be in the works.
Harper came to Magic after 14 years at 100.3 WNIC, where he hosted the hugely-popular Jim Harper and the Breakfast Club morning show. After he left WNIC for WMGC, the two stations often duked it out for adult contemporary listeners.

A comment thread at the Magic 105.1 website has hundreds of memories and well-wishes from fans of Harper, whose first gig in front of the microphone was as a 13-year-old in 1967.

Harper, who spent much of his childhood in Westland, already was awarded keys to the city of Westland for his long, successful career in broadcasting. But the radio host who made nice his calling card was further honored by the city last week -- Dec. 16 was pronounced Jim Harper Day throughout Westland.

In a statement, Harper said, "There are so many people I wish to thank for a long and wonderful career, especially my wife, Lynn and the hundreds of talented broadcasters that I've been blessed to work for and with over the years, including Peter Smyth and the 'All Star Team' at Greater Media Detroit."
