Jets have decision to make on Scott - NFL on day true story

When Rex Ryan spoke at the NFL Combine last week, he addressed the Jets' turbulent and ultimately very unsuccessful 2011 season.

"There were some lessons well-learned," he said.

Really, Rex? Because it appears the Jets haven't learned anything at all. At least not in terms of team chemistry.

Word has leaked that the Jets would like to trade unhappy linebacker Bart Scott, who is scheduled to make a guaranteed $4.2 million in base salary in 2011. It wasn't that long ago that Scott was the cornerstone signee of the first Rex Ryan free-agent class, back in the winter of 2009.

In fact, Ryan came to Scott's doorstep at 12:01 a.m. the first day of the free-agency period that year, making sure the player he had coached in Baltimore as a defensive coordinator was his first priority.

Scott doesn't seem to be that high on the list at the moment.

Scott recently had a meeting with Jets' brass at the Combine to discuss his future with the team. Scott's agent, Harold Lewis, said Monday "the ultimate goal for Bart would be to stay a Jet. ... It was a very productive meeting and I think we made it very clear Bart would like to stay a Jet."

However, Lewis didn't deny that Scott was unhappy with his playing time in 2011, saying Scott felt "a lot of frustration" about the way he was used. He often came out of the lineup on third down and in hurry-up situations. The Jets lost their last three games and finished 8-8, missing the playoffs for the first time in the three-year Rex Ryan era.

"He was not getting the same opportunity to do things" on the field, Lewis said. "He feels his play has not diminished in any way."

Scott has three years left on a six-year, $48 million deal he signed in 2009. The Jets restructured Scott's contract last summer and made him take a $1 million pay cut in 2011, with the provision that his 2012 salary would be guaranteed. That guaranteed salary may make it difficult for the Jets to find a trade partner for Scott and his contract.

Lewis said that he and Scott have not asked permission to seek a trade. Scott is considered a good influence in the Jets' locker room, which came under fire last season for some fracturing. "Bart kept it together in there," Lewis said. "He wasn't one of those guys having problems."

"We'll see what happens over the next couple of weeks," general manager Mike Tannenbaum said in an interview on ESPN Radio's New York affiliate. "All options are on the table. We're going to keep having discussions with him, and we'll see where things go."
