Ascot Gold Cup: Royal Meeting next for Hawaafez on day true story
Trainer Marcus Tregoning will now reportedly target Hawaafez at the Ascot Gold Cup after the filly put in a gutsy display to land the listed Aston Park Stakes by four lengths on Saturday afternoon at Newbury...
Saturday's performance marked a career-best for the four-year-old, who posted a Timeform rating of 114 on what was only her eighth racecourse start, and connections anticipate further improvement in the coming weeks.
Hawaafez still has plenty to find with the market principals in the Group 1 Ascot feature, currently considered 10 lb inferior to Fame and Glory based on Timeform ratings. She will be in receipt of a fillies' allowance on Gold Cup day, however, so she should not be under-estimated.
The two-and-a-half-mile trip is a question mark for the Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned runner, although she did seem to have ample stamina for the mile-and-five-furlong test on Saturday as well as when fnishing sixth in last year's Queen's Vase at the Royal Meeting, making headway late on.
Hawaafez is available to back at (27.026/1) for the Ascot Gold Cup after Saturday's victory, whilst Fame and Glory remains the favourite, currently trading at (3.62/1).
