"Damsels in Distress" Whit Stillman directs this comedy about a group of female college students setting out to revolutionize life at a grungy American university by helping severely depressed students with a program of good hygiene and musical dance numbers. But their friendships are strained when they become romantically involved with a series of men. Rated PG-13 for mature thematic content including some sexual material. Starts Friday at GoggleWorks Film Theatre, with Reading Eagle critic, columnist and editor John Fidler leading a discussion to follow the 7 p.m. Tuesday screening.
R-Phils: The Reading Phillies are in the midst of a road trip that will keep them out of town until Tuesday, when they return to FirstEnergy Stadium to take on the Binghamton Mets, starting at 7:05 p.m. The first 750 adults 15 and older will receive an R-Phils Legend Photo featuring 2009-'10 Eastern League All-Star Vance Worley. Wednesday's game also begins at 7:05 p.m., with the first 750 adults receiving a Legend Photo of 2004 EL All-Star Ryan Howard. Wednesday is also $16 Family Night at the Pool. Open mic nights: The Reading Comedy Outlet presents an open mic competition on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. in Alley Oops Showroom at Hiester Lanes, 801 Hiester's Lane. The competition will be hosted by Jesse Keim, above, a stand-up comic who performs a weekly podcast called "The Jesse Keim Show," in which he talks about movies, TV, comedy and music. Devon Horse Show & Country Fair: Hunters, jumpers, saddle horses, hackney and fine harness horses and breeding classes all will do battle as the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair opens today and continues through June 3 on the show grounds along Route 30 in Devon. The show, which debuted in 1896, is the oldest and largest outdoor multi-breed competition in the United States. Horse show hours are 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, and the country fair is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily except Sundays, when it opens at 11 a.m. The fair includes boutique shopping, midway rides, games and fine food, plus special events such as a Ladies Day Hat Contest (Wednesday), free guided back barn tours and a Doggie Parade (Monday).
