NFL: Kyle Orton is named Denver Broncos' starting quarterback on day true story

Denver Broncos coach John Fox has seen enough to name Kyle Orton his starting quarterback. What he hasn't determined is who's No. 2. Fox said Monday that Tim Tebow and Brady Quinn have two more exhibition games to win the job as Orton's primary backup.

Because the league's new rules don't mandate teams designate their quarterback rotation on game day any more, the winner of that QB competition might remain a mystery, barring an injury to Orton.

The Broncos began training camp trying to trade Orton but when no teams made an offer, they opened the competition and Orton quickly showed he was the best of the bunch. He's gotten almost all of the work with the starters.

Redskins: Coach Mike Shanahan said he won't announce a starting quarterback for the regular season until "right before" the Sept. 11 opener against the New York Giants. That means two more weeks of suspense as Rex Grossman and John Beck compete for the No. 1 job. Even after he makes the decision, Shanahan isn't going to let the world know because he wants to keep the Giants guessing.

Bills: Having led the Bills in rushing the past two seasons, Fred Jackson would like to be treated with a little more respect. Jackson expressed his unhappiness following practice, saying he feels underappreciated and uncertain of where he stands. "I feel like a No. 1 back," Jackson said. "I feel like I should be treated like one, know what's going on, know where I stand

and what the situation is."

Browns: The team has reached agreement with Pro Bowl offensive tackle Joe Thomas on a seven-year contract extension. According to ESPN.com, citing anonymous league sources, the package is worth $84 million and includes $44 million in guaranteed money.

Exhibition: Brandon Jacobs scored on an 18-yard run, Domenik Hixon caught a 5-yard touchdown pass and the host Giants cashed in on big special teams plays in a 41-13 victory over the Chicago Bears that was marred by the loss of starting cornerback Terrell Thomas to a major knee injury.
