The University of Wisconsin turned a profit of $382,445 for participating in the 2012 Rose Bowl game, according to an accounting provided to the Journal Sentinel.
The university had revenue of $2,615,684, including a Rose Bowl payment of $2.3 million, and expenses totaling $2,233,240.
UW lost the game to the University of Oregon, 45-38.
It's not cheap sending a college football team anywhere, but the ledger provided by UW shows just how expensive it can be. Air travel for team totaled $367,000. Hotel costs totaled $275,601, and team meals at the hotel were $191,331.
Other expenses:
1. The cost of sending the official UW party totaled $115,589. Air travel for just the UW Band was $375,000.
2. UW officials rented out the Santa Monica Pier for a pep rally. Total cost: $32,179.
3. UW spent just over $49,000 to entertain the team, including visits to Disneyland and Universal Studios. The figure includes $29,500 for gift cards for the players.
UW also listed as an expense a total of $215,950 for free tickets or unsold tickets to the game. UW Athletic Department spokesman Justin Doherty said unsold tickets were tickets that were left over and didn't sell out of the total number of tickets that were allotted to the school.
Free, or complimentary tickets were primarily for certain members of the UW party, including coaches and senior staff members, Doherty said.
Free tickets also aren't entirely free. Those who were provided complimentary tickets were taxed on the value of the tickets, university officials said.
Members of the football program, as well as UW Athletic Department members, were given a total of 415 complimentary tickets.
A total of 997 tickets were provided to the UW Foundation and the Wisconsin Alumni Foundation and other institutional groups. Vince Sweeney, vice chancellor for university relations, said members of those groups paid for their tickets.
