State-of-the-art, 10-screen movie theater will make its debut at Grand Boulevard | sandestin, boulevard, screen on day true story
SANDESTIN — A new state-of-the-art movie theater is expected to open in Grand Boulevard by the time Spider-Man and Batman make their returns to the big screen next summer.
The groundbreaking for Carmike Cinema's new 10-screen, 1,800-seat theater, which will be named Montecito 10, is expected in mid-November.
"We're just so excited to announce that this state-of-the-art movie complex is going to be opening in Grand Boulevard next summer," said Stacey Brady, director of marketing for Grand Boulevard. "We know that residents and visitors alike are going to be very excited about this offering.
"It's going to be a fabulous addition not only to Grand Boulevard, but to Walton County and the entire area," she added.
Carmike Cinema is targeting a July 4, 2012, opening, the day after Sony's reboot "The Amazing Spider-Man" opens and two weeks before "The Dark Knight Rises," the final film in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy.
Carmike Cinema is expected to employ up to 200 construction workers on the theater.
Brady said a movie theater has been in the plans for Grand Boulevard since the development's inception. Grand Boulevard was in talks with different theater chains last year before negotiations with Carmike Cinema progressed this year.
"From the beginning, the Carmike folks presented a very high-quality movie theater offering," Brady said. "There are a lot of unique aspects to this complex. It's not just a great movie theater, although that is what it is, first and foremost. It has additional components and diversity that makes it very attractive for Grand Boulevard and the community."
Montecito 10 will feature two special auditoriums among its 10 screens.
One, dubbed the Big D, will boast a screen more than 60 feet wide, three stories tall and with the brightest picture in the theater industry, said Terrell Mayton, spokesman for Carmike Cinema.
At the other end of the spectrum, there will be an auditorium called the Ovation Club. It will seat only 60 people and feature plush, leather reclining chairs. The Ovation Club is designed to be a more intimate venue, and will feature a full food menu as well as beer and wine.
"What ties it all together is we work very hard to make sure our guests have just an exceptional presentation, from the screen to the comfort of the seating to being warmly welcomed," Mayton said. "We know when people come out to go to a movie it's an event and an activity, and we want to make it special for them."
