NFL Power Rankings: Contender, Pretender and Cellar Dweller with Best Future on day true story

We watch all the NFL games or, at least, we tune into NFL Redzone to feel like we saw every game. Though any football game is worth a little bit of interest, the fact is, there are only a few teams with a real shot at hoisting Lombardi trophy in February. You can pretty much group NFL teams into these three different categories:

Contenders:

These are the teams that are leading their division or a game or less behind one of the elite division leaders. The teams that fall into this category are Green Bay Packers, San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers.

That is a larger group than normal, but this season is filled with parity.

Of those teams, the Packers have the best future.

Why:

Aaron Rodgers is leading an offense that is high-octane and very effective, to say the least. The Pack don't have a offensive lineman over 30 years old. Most are 25 or younger. The same can be said for the receivers, with the exception of Donald Driver, who the Packers have the depth to replace.

Win or Lose, would the Packers still be the favorites to win in 2012

  • Yes

  • No

Rodgers himself is only 28. This offense is going to be among the top three in the NFL for the next four years. As for defense, they need to get younger at corner and add a bigger playmaker at the NT.

All these things are reasonable adds. We all should get used to seeing the Packers at the top of the power rankings.

Pretenders:

These are the fringe playoff teams and second-place teams that are far cries from the teams they chase in their division. The group includes: Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, NY Jets, Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texans, Tennessee Titans, San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs and Arizona Cardinals.

The team that has the best future of this hefty group is the Detroit Lions.

Why:

  • Brees-Graham NO

  • Stafford-Johnson DET

  • Brady-Welker NE

  • Ryan-White ATL

The Lions have a premier offensive playmaker and a young QB with all the tools. As good as he has been, fans must realize, because he has been injured, Matt Stafford is still learning. The Lions rookie RB that was injured in training camp, Mikel LeShoure, has a good future if he is healthy.

The defense is young, nasty and led by Ndamukong Suh. They need to learn to play smarter and avoid personal fouls, but the Packers-Lions rivalry should gain some steam over the next few years.

Cellar Dwellers:

This is the group of teams that are not playoff contenders and figure to be more than one significant move away from contending next season. The group includes: Minnesota Vikings, Washington Redskins, Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Seattle Seahawks, St. Louis Rams, Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars.

The team with the best future here is the Carolina Panthers.

Why:

The Panthers have a young franchise QB in Cam Newton. He is an excellent leader, and he has weapons on offense in Steve Smith, Greg Olsen and DeAngelo Williams. Consider the fact that they played this season without their best defensive player in MLB Jon Beason. That side of the ball should be improved next season.

  • Cam Newton

  • Andrew Luck

  • Robert Griffin III

  • Christian Ponder

  • Sam Bradford

The Panthers need help in other areas, of course, which is why their in this group. But the toughest positions are filled.
